Suzuki’s intelligence, work ethic make him a special player | HI/O Bonus

Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki has been carrying the team on his shoulders since the 4 Nations Face-Off break in the schedule.

That doesn’t come as a surprise to former NHLer Nate Thompson, who was Suzuki’s linemate when he was an NHL rookie in 2019-20. Thompson, who played 15 seasons in the NHL, including two with the Canadiens, is a special guest on this Hockey Inside/Out Show bonus episode, joining The Gazette’s Stu Cowan and former Canadiens defenceman and 1986 Stanley Cup champion Rick Green, to discuss what has impressed them most about Suzuki’s play this season.

  1. I saw Nick Suzuki when he was playing Junior with the OHL Guelph Storm. His style of play was already that of an NHL level center. He was so responsible defensively, made generous passes to his wingers, had uncanny anticipation. I remember thinking that the Habs have a special prospect here. I was not wrong.

  2. Did Nick miss a game since coming to the Canadians? Besides high hockey IQ, leadership, etc, the guy knows how to stay healthy. And it's not like he's playing sheltered minutes or not making hits

  3. Solid determination to get into the playoffs. When they lost to Tampa Bay in the finals, I remember hearing that Suzuki sat alone in the stands staring at the rink for the longest time. He us now leading the charge to get back there.

  4. I said it the year they went to the final, Nick will lead this team to a Cup win. I believe it then, I believe it more today

  5. I went to the NHL all star fan event in Toronto 2024. Nick was scheduled for an autograph signing at 10. Doors open at 9am. I was in line, finally got in at 9:30am, headed straight to Suzuki's autograph signing. They told me it was sold out, I could get in line which had about 200 people. That's how popular he is! He's a rock star. AND, he stuck around to sign more autographs after that line was done.
