In the U.S. Navy, male fingernails could not extend past our finger-tips. For most gents, you can grow almost a quarter of an inch of fingernail and be within regs. With that being said, if you had my job of Aviation Electricians Mate, that could still pose a problem, especially when safety-wiring.
