How the Best Team in NHL History Fell Apart

How the Best Team in NHL History Fell Apart

In 2023 the Boston Bruins had the best regular season ever with 65 wins and 135 points. Two years later, they’re one of the worst teams in the league. How did things go so wrong so fast? It didn’t end with a playoff loss — that was just the start.

  1. It's eerily similar to the Rangers' stunning collapse. Prez trophy last year and best record in franchise history. Nice, deep run into the playoffs and only beaten by the juggernaut and eventual cup winner Florida. Still lots of talent on an admittedly older team, right? Fantastic goalie, right? Up and coming talent fairly deep in the bullpen, right? No, says the idiot Chris Drury! He sees an early 2024 slump and says the team is worthless and is on an unavoidable downhill slope! Sell, sell, sell, says the idiot Drury! And says it very publicly, to boot. And announces his intentions to every other team, to boot! Never mind team loyalty, cohesion, grit, and putting themselves on the line, loving the fans and generally the organization. Sell, sell, sell! What. An. Ass. Hole.

  2. Their fans talked so much trash, things like "we are gonnah sweep everyone 16-0 in playoffs!!" with that stupid Boston accent. Then they got a dose of KARMA. Most of those so called "fans" were a bunch of front-running DULLARDS that knew nothing about their own team or even hockey for that matter. KARMA!!

  3. I remember going to the Fleet Center (Now called TD Garden) back in 2002-2003 and buying tickets 15 minutes before game time because they never sold out. People in Boston did not give a crap about the Bruins for YEARS. Then they get better and all of the sudden they call themselves "die hards" and they don't remember names like: Jason Allison (their captain), Brian Rolston, P.J. Axelsson ect. They are all a bunch of front runners and pink hats.

  4. Thanks Jeremy you selfish twat. Marchand was not a good choice to be Captain, way to leave the second things don’t go your way

  5. The retool won’t take long. They have a #1 goalie and dman in Mccavoy. Plus pasta. I think they made the right move to retool. This from a leaf fan.

  6. As a Bruins fan, I feel like not having any sort of succession plan for when Bergeron and Krejci would inevitably retire played a big part in sparking this collapse. But, it’s looking like a hopefully somewhat quick retool/rebuild.

  7. Monty clearly didn’t want to be here and knew he had a job waiting in St Louis. He ran a terrible camp, looked completely lifeless on the bench, and seemed indifferent in interviews. Probably saw the iceberg coming and bailed early.

  8. Every team inevitably hits a rebuild in a capped league. Part of the magic. Any team has a chance to find a good window. Boston has been so good for so long. I’m not a bruins fan but I can imagine that most would say they’re grateful for a fun core. And watching rebuilds can be fun.

  9. The "best" team in NHL history? Are you insane or just plain stupid? The 1976-77 Canadiens had 3 fewer points in a season that had 2 fewer games in it and more importantly, they only lost TWO games in the entire playoffs and SWEPT the Bruins to win THE CUP!

If you don't win the Stanley Cup, you're not in the conversation for best team ever. That's like saying the 2007-08 Patriots were the best team ever after LOSING Super Bowl XLII to the Giants.

The President's Trophy does not the best team make. No cup, no best team, period. That you would refer to them as such means that you sholdn't be taken seriously.

You have 12,935 views with only 504 likes. It's clear that nobody does take you seriously.

  10. A lot of your points are valid. However, for some reason you gave Swayman a free pass. He's been absolutely awful this season. Awful. And beyond his play on the ice, it's clear as day around here that his teammates cannot stand him. I'm not sure where the B's go from here with him as the contract they gave him makes him virtually untradeable.

  11. Sens fan here. We've survived 8 years of non-playoff hockey. Bottom 5 team of the league for most of those. Stop crying, Boston! You guys ain't Buffalo. Experience the suck for a while, you whiny assholes! And thank you for Linus Ullmark. GSG!!

  12. I love feel-good stories like this. Makes me feel all giddy and silly inside. I'mma gonna go do some cartwheels now.

  13. This was inevitable but it's not as bad as it could be. Worse collapses have happened to other teams. They still have valuable pieces but they do need to do some rebuilding, which will take a little bit of time.

  14. ?!?!?!??!?!??!?!?! THEY WON ONE FLUKE CUP IN 2011. What is this CRAP. Bruins fans….. you're more gey than green teamers now. STOP! the BRUINS SUCK! ONE FLUKE CUP. in 50 years you idiots!!! wake up

  15. This was an interesting wrap up but honestly i don’t think it really sums up the 24-25 season. Monty’s firing was easily the dumbest decision of the season, though. Swayman is a good goaltender but Ullmark is clearly the better of the two.
The season was really lost to two things- injury and chemistry. Hampus Lindholm hasn’t played since the start of November, McAvoy has been out for almost half the year with injuries. That’s defensemen #1 and #2. Trent Frederic missed a bunch of time throughout with injuries, and the coaching staff decided not to bring up rising talent Matt Poitras to help the center depth issue. All of that and Elias Lindholm has looked TERRIBLE. He needs a stint in the AHL or something he seriously has been a ghost out there.

  16. As a Toronto fan this had to be the greatest coach firing in NHL history. The Blues are pretty happy about it too i think.

  17. Bruins fan, other than upsetting the Maple Leafs year after year as a consolation prize and winning the Stanley Cup in 2011 it's been miserable for us the past 14 years. Don Sweeney's moves were mostly atrocious and self-destructed our franchise in short order, but since the Jacob Bros love him it's unlikely he'll get fired anytime soon.

  18. Welcome to reality 🙌 YEET‼️ The Detroit Red Wings had the greatest team assembled lost 99 and then won 2002 jmo they should have three-peated

  19. Idk why at that point they simply don’t fire there gm it’s clear to me that there Gm doesn’t have it anymore and just collapsed his team

  20. Don't forget the Red Wings squad that should have repeated but got favor by FACE OF THE PLACE & TERRIBLE LEADERSHIP CROSBY
