Marc Gatcomb scored twice and Ilya Sorokin made 27 saves for the New York Islanders while Alex Ovechkin’s 895th goal was the lone score for the Washington Capitals, as the Islanders went on to win 4-1.

#8 OVI OVI OVI. На этом стадионе раньше так никогда не кричали)
А Сорокин сегодня пропустил только от лучшего снайпера в Мире 💪💪
Congrats Ovi! You did what everyone once thought was impossible.
leonard looked like a deer in headlights on the first goal
Heard the seats for this game were up in the $1-2k range. Worth. Every. Penny.
Imo he just should have tried your to get that empty netter in previous game for hat trick and a win on the home ice. Would have been much cooler and cathartic compared to this single lonely spark on another team's ice, while also his team got stomped in the end.
He wanted to do it cool and all, but instead… meh, kinda ruined the moment.
Put some more effort into the game's description @Sportsnet
Какое убожество,одно и то же,даже этот гол забил как всегда стоя на одном месте пока команда играла.Позорник путинский.
Сорокин тоже вошел в историю – дал забить Михалычу 895, но при этом забрал эту важную игру. Красавцы оба…
Should’ve done it at home Thursday for your real fans.
Best goal scorer of my generation and the angrier he got the more physical and better he played, I’m gen-X. Looks like the NY Isles found a diamond in the rough with Marc Gatcomb
2:21 исторический момент 👽
2:21 этот момент навсегда 👀
Congrats, Ovi!
Will we ever see a great replay of that goal ?
That right there folks, is history! Congratulations to Alex Ovechkin, the Greatest goal scorer in NHL history!
Quite a task to choose a first star of the game)
Ovechkin's face when he did it. Greatest game ever! And on my birthday to bout!
Гретцки осталось один гол до рекорда Овечкина 🏒
Sorokin only let Ovi break the record and completely shut the door after that
Саня!🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺
They lost the game. Thx Ove from Wpg !!
I kinda hope he did this against the penguins
He recreated “the flying goal” by Bobby
I was born in 2006 and growing up as a nhl fan. Congrats Ovechkin for breaking the all time goals record with 895 goals.
FACTS: Back in the 80's decade there was an average of almost 8 players per season who scored 50 or more goals. In the modern NHL era after the 2005/2006 salary cap, that stat has fallen to an average of just 2 players per season. No other player in the modern NHL era has even come remotely close to Ovechkin when it comes to goals. Even Wayne Gretzky 'The Great One' himself clearly admitted in a 2019 interview: "I played in the right era, it's harder to score now than it was when I played."
The statistical average number of goals scored per game per team in the 15 NHL seasons between 1979 to 1994 when Gretzky played his first 15 seasons was 3.71 goals. The statistical average number of goals scored per game per team in the 15 NHL seasons between 2005 to 2020 when Ovechkin played in his first 15 seasons was 2.85 goals. That's a 30% difference which means that it is statistically 30% more difficult to score goals in the modern era compared to back in the 80's and early 90's.
When people only look at a 1:1 goal comparison between Gretzky's total goals and Ovechkin's total goals, its like comparing a sprinter who is running on flat level surface to that of a sprinter running uphill on an incline. Ovechkin's modern era goal total needs to be calibrated by a factor of 30% in order to properly compare to Gretzky's goal total: 894 goals x 1.30 = 1162 goals > Gretzky's 894 goals. And that's not even counting the 50+ goals Ovechkin would have certainly scored in the 2004/2005 lockout season, not to even mention the 2 recent shortened seasons due to the pandemic. It really puts into perspective what Ovechkin has achieved in the modern NHL era. It's like catching up to the fastest sprinter in history after having a late start while running against an incline, and then passing that fastest sprinter with a quarter length of track remaining.
Just look at the difference between the small, thin, straight-standing goalies from the 80's that Gretzky got to score on compared to the monster sized, super-skilled goalies in the modern NHL era that Ovechkin had to face. Look at the difference in their size of pads, height, reach, flexibility, technique, and most importantly skill. Most goalies from the 80's played worse than today's amateur beer league goalies. During Gretzky's first 15 seasons, the average NHL goalie save percentage was 0.879 and the average GAA was 3.65, which is unheard of among today's modern era NHL goalies, except maybe in the minors. Also, no players bothered to block shots back in the 80's, just imagine how many more goals Ovechkin would have if players today played 80's style defense and did not bother to block shots.
Gretzky also played on a decade-long dynasty team in an era with no salary cap. The 80's Oilers Dynasty fab 5 players would have never been allowed to exist on the same team after the salary cap was put in place in 2005 during Ovechkin's first season. Ovechkin played every single season under a limiting salary cap which made the league way more competitive and with a much more leveled playing field. Gretzky never played under a salary cap, not even a single season.
Gretzky also had the luxury of having his two on-ice bodyguard thugs (Semenko and McSorley) with him all throughout the 80s and the first half of the 90s for intimidation. Semenko and McSorley constantly threatened & intimidated other players and made sure nobody touched Gretzky whenever he had the puck which allowed Gretzky to make all those plays and rack up all those points. Back in the 80s and early 90s, Gretzky was the NHL's official Golden Boy and nobody was allowed to lay a hand on him. What a joke.

Wish the CAPS could have won along with this momentus occasion, yet it doesnt stop this being such an achievement for Ovechkin. 8 is a legend and glad he has been a Capital all these years. ALL CAPS and congrats to Ovi!
Ovi was born on September 17th 1985
Take that day and you have in number form 09/17/1985
Drop 19 in the year 1985 and you have 09/17/85
Multiply those numbers 9x17x85 and you get 13,005
Gretzky was born on January 26, 1961
Gretzky broke Howe's goal record on March 23, 1994
It took Gretzky 12,109 days in his life to break Howe's goal record
Take 13,005 and subtract 12,109 and you get 896
Day 96 in the calendar year 2025 is April 6th
It took Ovi who wears number 8 96 days into 2025 to break Gretzky's goal record
Back to the number 13,005
From 13,005 add 895 (the number to brake the record) and 894 (Gretzky's goal record) and you get 14,794
Now take the number 895. Multiply 8x9x5 and you get 360
Subtract 360 from 14,794 and you get 14,434
On April 6, 2025 Ovi is 39 years, 6 months & 20 days old
Now take 14,434 and add 39 and you get 14,473
Then take 14,473 and subtract 6 and 20 and you get 14,447
Lastly take 14,447 and subtract 1 (the number of goals he needed to break Gretzky's goal record) and you get 14,446
14,446 is the number you get. 14,446 is the number of days Ovi's has lived From September 17, 1985 to April 6, 2025 and the number of days it took in Ovi's life to break Gretzky's goal record
Guess it was meant to be that Ovi breaks the record today on April 6, 2025 against the Islanders
Also the puck for Ovi's record breaking 895th goal went into the net at a speed of 85 miles/hour. Ovi was born in '85 (1985)
I wanted it to happen on home ice but having the enemy team cheer for you like they just won the stanley cup makes it even more special.

✨️History is made✨️
Привет из Кыргызстана, парень родившись в СССР сделал побил рекорд.
2:57 is why this is happening. the way he jumps forward. he knew he was gunna score before he even did it. gr8est ever
Congratulations to Ovechkin on breaking the all time goal scoring record with his 895th goal.
Fun Fact: Wayne Gretzky scored his last goal against the Islanders March 29, 1999, Wade Flaherty in net. Alex Ovechkin scored his 895th goal on April 6, 2025, to break Gretzky’s record, against the Islanders, Ilya Sorokin in net. Interesting coincidence.
2:23 895th
When he was drafted in 04', you knew he was generational talent. Today, and throughout his career he has shown that belongs amongst the greatest players in NHL history. May you be the the first member of the 900 (and likely only) goal club! Congratulations to the greatest goal scorer in NHL history!
Made in Russia
The entire arena cheering for him
It’s ok to be Russian
