This Guy Was A Nobody Last Year

Jackson LaCombe is on pace for 50 points this season and is clearly the best defenseman in Anaheim right now. Before this season, however, he wasn’t even supposed to be a top-4 defenseman. Where did he even come from?

Thank you so much for watching!
I don’t know who actually reads this deep into the description but I appreciate you more than most for actually doing that. You’re just hella academic and one could say you’re a bit of a book worm.

  1. I called LaCombe our most impressive rookie during my recap of last season, now I feel like a mystic. There were a lot of flashes of what hes doing now last season. During the off-season he worked with a former special forces member to train "fearlessness", Verbeek talks about it in detail in one of the light the lamp podcasts early this season. Quite clear that was a success. LaCombe is on pace for 45+ point over a 82 game sample, and that is on what has been an anemic offense and TERRIBLE power play. I don't think saying he can fight for 65+ points is out of the discussion in the future! I dream of when we get a new head coach and our players stop bobling away 2/3's of our attacks xd. Great vid highlighting a player who goes under the radar due to where he is and not who he is, easy sub.

  2. Never payed to much attention to this guy till recently he is really damn good. I noticed how good Holloway last year and wasn’t surprised this year and I knew the blues made one hell of a deal off the offer sheets. But this guy was truly under the radar

  3. This was great. Fantastic breakdown and spotlight on the little things Lacombe does that make him a phenomenal player but are often overlooked because they're rarely flashy. It also nailed one of Anaheim's major problems smack on the head: a great offensive chance dying on a forward's stick either due to a crap pass or a bobbled reception. It's infuriating how bad this team is at putting plays together through the neutral and offensive zone despite guys like Lacombe and Zegras dishing dimes.

That and on the chance the pass does get through, they're either opting to try and pass again (which usually fails) or their shot misses the net by a foot. The Ducks are a bottom-10 team in percentage of shot attempts missed this year.

  4. As a Ducks fan who lives (currently) in Eden Prairie where Jackson is from, you have no idea how hyped I am to have him.

  5. Last time the ducks played the canucks, my biggest takeaway was, who the f— is this Lacombe kid?!

Great video again homie. Love to see young people talking hockey.

  6. I have defended Jackson since he was drafted, most people on the ducks subreddit would talk crap and talk down on him but what I kept saying is that Jackson was playing against the top lines every game, he would show a lot of promise but made small mistakes. Jackson is our new cam Fowler and maybe even better.

  7. Kids a stud. Picked him up in fantasy this year he’s a beast. Invested in some of his hockey cards aswell haha hope he gets traded to a bigger market

  8. If you told me before the season that Lacombe was going to be the best between Lacombe, Minty, Zell, and Luneau. I’d laugh. Minty was amazing last year and looked like he was going to have the season that Lacombe is having now.

Ducks are having a 500 season. Think they can make the jump to playoffs next year.

  9. The Ducks sure know how to draft defensemen! Many of their D selections are thriving around the league…

  10. I randomly picked this guy up for my fantasy team back in January and he has arguably been my best pick up all year. Decided to watch him a couple times when the notifications for points came rolling in and he is amazing to watch

  11. What is it with these dmen getting drafted in the second round turning into solid or even star players 😂 it’s weird but fun to watch

  12. awesome video to see as a Ducks fan! Thank you for explaining the analytics of hockey so well, I was able to understand it very well as a casual fan! 🙂

  13. Purely on the eye test you can tell this guy is gonna go far. He's got such a relaxed and calm demeanor with the puck that isn't common with young players. Gotta keep this kid on my radar.

  14. As a basketball fan I saw this in my feed and decided to watch on a whim. This is my first exposure into hockey analytics and "Xs and Os" as we'd call it in hoops. I may not understand a whole lot but I remained thoroughly invested in this video like I am woth Thinking Basketball and I'm probably gonna start going into deeper rabbit holes because of this.

EDIT: Also I am in love with your writing and editing style. It's all info, but with just enough lightheartedness and casual humour to make it all easier to digest.

  15. As a gopher fan, wish he was on the Wild playing alongside Brodin or Faber.

Giving him his credit like he deserves, but also wish he’d stay under the radar and come to Minnesota.

  16. I played high school hockey with Jackson’s dad and uncle in central Minnesota. Not surprised to see a great player come from that family!

  17. Great video, however, one note, the rebuild started in the 21-22 season really. That’s when they sold off any older players they could. And the ducks are improving but as you said, they are young and like lacombe, not consistent yet.
