A lowly 188 goals from age 30 until he was cooked at 38. Ovechkin is at 417 goals from age 30 until today.
Gretzky also had a pathetic 9 goals in his last season with an even more pathetic 3 goals in his final 40 career games.
He was limping all the way to 894 while Ovechkin is powering through to 895.

You know, all considering.. I think Ovi is the best goal scorer of all time. Gretzky’s tenure complicates matters, as we traverse multiple generations of hockey style that have led to both dramatic increases and decreases in scoring.
Gretzky played in an era where scoring was at its peak, however, the back end of his career was in the dead puck era of hockey. Some of the consistently lowest scoring tilts we’ve ever seen. Weighing the two against each other.. I honestly think it puts Gretzky at a fair mark. Watching him score some of those 80s goals is actually pretty comical. While it’s unfair to compare players against future times (we don’t know how they would have been and evolved if given future scenarios, modern game learning from a young age) there’s a couple of things ovi has going for him that really cement his mark
1) his career may not be over. There’s a chance this guy hits 1000
2) patented slapper. Unstoppable physical force. The goals have reflected it. Consistently averaging 40 over his career, every season, even now as a 39 yo man
