If they don't make it, which I don't see them doing (hope I'm wrong of course), I think it's on Yzerman's inability to improve the team through both free agents and trades. I still don't know how he doesn't make a move all season to improve the abysmal defense, especially the 3rd pair.
Yzerman's lack of reaction to the Copp injury and Larkin/Raymond being injured or just bad after 4 Nations, as well as Mo, Ed playing terribly in March, are all in many ways to blame. Compher and Tarasenko were also esp bad in March.
But yea. Kane had 17 points in 14 games in the month. Larkin and Raymond combined had 19 points. That's not getting it done this time of year on such a thin top heavy team, esp w Copp out.
Go after rfa's Evan Bouchard and K'Andre Miller to solidify defense. Both 25 yr olds and both play of their teams, respectively, d line. Do not resign Petrey or Gus and release Holl.
Its ok, were not going to make it. Wait 2-3 more years and we will be at min a playoff team for a while. 1 more good forward. 2 more good dmen. 1 solid goalie and were in….
The pro scouts have been brutal. The lack of competent NHL calibre defence men cost us another season. I know there just developing our kids in the minors and the current defence squad is here to fill in for the moment, but there terrible.
Their fate was already decided and what sunk them was a lack of talent and even worse a lack of heart.
Fate was decided when they decided to win 4 games in the last month. Should be titled 9 games until the off season.
I think the Red Wings need to go 8-1 remaining to make the playoffs..

If football is based on building through the trenches to be able to become a serious Super Bowl contender than the Red Wings were never really built through the trenches so far as physicality and toughness and that's why they always fall apart in March when other teams are making a push for the playoffs they seem to fall apart… They need more grimy guys like Watson and Tyler Bertuzzi type players.. this team is Young and talented and have a bright future but they're still on playoff built.. the thing with Steve eisman that frustrates me is that he has yet to really go ballz to the wall to have that type of team.. you don't have to spend a crazy amount either to build your team that way with solid vets.. another thing a lot like Troy Weaver, Stevie has been pretty good and drafting but when it comes to free agents we have had more duds than studs.. Stevie has to start hitting on his free agents to be able to help the youngsters..
Trading away Velano to get a pointless and expensive goalie upsets the locker room and shows there is no confidence in the goalies we already have in GR. Why not use Cossa instead? Or Campbell? Or Husso? Then injuries came and all of the sudden we have to move up all kinds of weak players. Watson, Shine, Smith and also Motte are all way worse players than Velano.
Defense for me is where we've lost it these past few seasons. The goalie's haven't been great, but as we only have 2 1/2 D-men the GKs have no support and so get overloaded and have too much work to do.
I'd much rather see the wings lose out. Sure get some goals, make it somewhat entertaining, but the Wings aren't ready for the playoffs. Sucks to admit it.
