He's probably underrated because he's a Q goalie, and the Q is kinda garbage.
This is why I think that it is really dumb when people say "If the Red Wings don't make the playoffs this year, they should fire Yzerman". Yzerman was clear when he got here six years ago, he isn't building a team to make the playoffs again by any particular year, he is building a team to credibly compete for the Stanley Cup once all of the pieces are in place. And he was clear from the start that this rebuild would take time and so he asked for some patience.
I can understand the thought that we can't wait forever, but I can point to the actual progress he has made. In 2019, the talent pipeline was empty. Now it is stacked. It will take a few more years for Cossa, ASP, and MBN to work their way into regular spots in the NHL lineup, and then for them and Edvinson and Kasper to finish adjusting to the NHL (including adjusting to how the league adjusts to them). But once that is done, we should have a real powerhouse, and simply making the playoffs should be a formality again. The end of the rebuild is in sight, and I couldn't imagine a worse time to give up and fire the GM to move in a different direction.
