I know that the trope of Sully not playing young guys gets blown out of proportion, but benching a young guy because your veteran messed up shows an extreme lack of trust and patience. What about our veteran defenseman play this season tells Sully that they are capable of holding the fort and making a huge offensive play for a comeback? Especially when we’ve seen how poorly they respond to playing with new partners. Plus they’re old. Is Letang really going to play better in extended minutes with a different partner when the Islanders are non-stop pressing? I think Sully did the whole team dirty just to bench a guy who was playing well enough to warrant a shot at the top pair…
I would have Avery Hayes even ahead of guys like Puustinen and Poulin.
I think sully was shortening the bench not punishing koli. I don't agree with him but that's sully. Koli is more promising than po and graves. Koli and Timmons 3rd pair.
what kind of pros and cons do you see from running 7 D and 11 F? more competition between players on the lower lines? D minutes spread out more keeping players fresh? increased F minutes giving us a push offensively? the ability to bench D who are playing like beer leaguers and still run 3 lines?
I was surprised that Poulin and Puustinen weren't traded at the deadline as a prospect add on to move Graves, or some of the older, non-core, players.
With the depth of the Pens system, and having so many picks available, do you see Dubas using an offer sheet to acquire a 2nd line center…someone better than Malkin?
I'll be very surprised if Dubas trades Karlsson or Rakell. Rakell's contract is just too good to let him go for less than an absolutely stunning offer. Karlsson is the team's number one defenseman…offensively. That contract will make him hard to move, and I don't see Dubas being willing to retain a lot on him.
Bench Karlsson and Letang
Kolyachanov is a stud. Letangs blunder on the blueline led to isles scoring, dont see why he was benched.. letang has been terrible all season long and worse off layely.
GM food for thought…along with the plethora of trade picks, who from our NHL/AHL teams do you regretfully (or not) package to trade players like Graves, Letang, Karlson, and if you must Jarry? I've always believed that the terrible Defensemen have caused the Goalies to break down during a season. How can you be an acrobat every night to save poor play in front of you? It has happened to Flower, Murray, and Jarry. Sure there's an easy one that gets by here or there, but why does that let the Defense, and Forwards not playing the right system off the hook? Invest in Top-tier D-Men now. There's plenty of talent in the Forward pool. Coming back around now, of all that talent, who gets used to oust the bad contracts we have?
