With Evan Bouchard heading into this summer on a expiring contract, any defenseman who is signed to a long term deal will have an affect on Bouchard’s next extension. Jakob Chychrun signed a 8×9 million dollar contract today and it is the first step in setting Evan Bouchard’s market.

this video should have been longer…tyler was cooking and getting into the details of comparing RFA's to UFA's. this is so important!! people need to understand that bouchard is going to get paid…but the oil will try to keep his cap hit as low as possible for as long as possible to keep their flexibility as much as they can. which means a bridge…which is a gamble…if bouchard does become what tyler believes he is (85-90 point offensive dman) the next pay day is more. They will absolutely gamble on a bridge and see if Bouchards "warts"(more like cancers by my assessment since they seem to kill the oilers chances at winning when they show up) stay or he develops out of them. if next year his defensive struggles remain, he's a 7 million dollar dman (you want the offense but you have to pay another 7-8 million dollar dman to serve as his life raft). if he blossoms out of them or shows that hes largely removed the warts, his pay day out of the bridge is well deserved. hes not a complete player, YET. the big tickets are for the complete players. Its ok to say hes good. its also ok to say hes not in the conversation of the top dman…i think the NHL agrees. his absence from team canada tells a lot. they didnt even bring him later when they could have.
Bouchard isnt worth anything north of 6 mil. If the oil want to pay 2 defenseman upwards of 20 mil, for the type of players they are, theyre not signing anyone again worth value
8x$6.9m…that’s the max, perhaps $1m over pay. Bouch gets 90% of pp time, plays pp, ot with 97&29. Bouch has cost himself at least $2m this year by showing the defensive liability and inconsistency he can have.

One thing to note any Chychurn PP points is the Caps still use Carlson as the starting D man on that unit. So Chychurn should see more points once Carlson hangs em up.
For some reason it just goes unspoken about that Bouchards ice time is 1 of 2 things.
1. A high majority of his minutes are played with 1 if not both of the best players in the world (arguably) how many points has Bouchard picked up by draisaitl or McDavid doing all the work and the big play but Bouchard just so happened to be the last guy to touch the puck? (Yes sometimes it’s cause he makes a nice play) how many points would chychrun have if he played all his minutes with them? We will never know. Bottom line bouchards numbers aren’t a representation of the player he is in my opinion.
2. He is usually paired with one of the oilers best defenders which spend a majority there time covering up for his mistakes OR his real lack of effort. Let’s take nurse for example, this guy is having a great year and in my opinion it is cause he is spending limited time covering up for Bouchard giveaways or the classic not picking up his man
