Cole is not Lane, but Cole will be a very good offensive Dman, Lane has better edge work and higher hockey IQ, the bigger question is, why they don't give Quinn Hutson a chance? he got a great season this year.
Tbh that draft was pretty much perfect for the habs.
High talent guy, possible 2C and a chance on the son of a habs fan favorite.
The main reason not to take him, is excactly what was said in the video, they are almost a carbon copy of the other.. and having too many similar type players is not always the best way to build a team.. specially when this is about havig multiple small defensemen. Come playoff time, having two small players on the D core, is not a great idea.
And considering that the habs still have Reinbacher, Mailloux and Engstrom in the system, and who knows who they would draft this year, or get in a trade during the summer. I’m fine with not having both Hutson’s in MTL.
This is probably also for similar reasons (amongst other reasons), why they didnt draft Michkov or any other small goal scorer like Caufield in recent drafts.
Nothing against smaller players, but teams usually try to not have too many on the same lines and position.
I get what he is saying, I don't blame him for not taking cole hutson. When you have lane, you have your power play quarter back, you have the offensive guy that you get a reliable dman to cover for his risks. If you want to win in the playoffs, you have to play a good matchup game too. If you have both hutson, you don't have one of your top pair that can shutdown the best players on other teams. If your first pair has lane, second pair has cole, who is going to play against mcdavid, mackinnon and all those guys ? They could manage it, but you need a guhle type of player to be on your top 4 to shutdown those superstar. Also, you need to build a team and the demidov pick was obvious, and then the michael hage pick has high upside and fits exactly what montreal need in the future. If cole fell even more in the draft, maybe they take him, but they don't take him over demidov or hage, which is reasonable.
