  1. that's when football was a MAN'S SPORT intead of today's boy's/girls sport. even women commentators. I no longer watch AMERICAN football.

  2. People need to stop blaming Tatum for doing his job. Preseason or not it doesn’t matter, Jack Tatum was there to make sure receivers regretted joining the NFL. Jack Tatum shouldn’t have to apologize for doing his job. The HoF is a joke “the assassin” should be in!

  3. Tatum played with the rules of the time and I seriously doubt he intended to paralyse Stingley, but this is the ultimate example of why some rules needed to be changed. Some are too far, QBs you can hardly touch but head hunting over the middle like this it’s better that it’s gone

  4. I was fourteen years old when I watched this game and saw that hit in 1978. Even today at 60 years old, whenever I see this footage, I get a little teary eyed. Jack Tatum and Ronnie Lott were two of the most feared men in their time. Jack Tatum lowered the "Boom" on Earl Campbell, though Earl Campbell still scored the one-yard touchdown, Earl Campbell was extremely slow getting up after he laid there for a while. Earl Campbell said, "The lick I took from Tatum, that's the only time I ever felt somebody hit me". But Tatum and Lott are the reason the refs (NFL) call the hits the way they do now in the NFL, especially when it comes to being a defenseless receiver.

  5. footage is grainy but from what i can tell that hit should have been illegal, the ball is dropped a hour ago and he hits him while he has his head down which obviously is what causes the paralysis, broke his whole neck and head for no reason

  6. Tatum was a cold, heartless player that tried to hurt people. He wasn't interested in tackling. He is a disgrace to the sport and I hope he's rotting in hell.

What kind of a person can't even apologize after paralyzing someone? What a weak, pathetic man…

  7. That was a bang bang play. It's a hit Tatum had made many times before. It was just extremely unfortunate. It was obviously illegal under the NFL rules today, but this hit happened in 1978, when it was deemed legal.

  8. That was not a cheap hit, however; Tatum should have contacted Stingley after he was paralyzed for life! That was weak on Jack's part!
