San Jose Sharks vs Carolina Hurricanes – 3/20/2025 – Teal Town USA After Dark (Postgame)

In Georgi Romanov’s first NHL start, played well but the offense came up short in a 3-1 Sharks loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. Luca Cagnoni made his NHL debut with a team high 23:15 of ice time for the 20-year old defenseman. Meanwhile, William Eklund had a strange slippery shorthanded goal for San Jose’s lone tally. The Eriks (Kuhre and Landi) break down Team Teal’s 42nd regulation loss this season.

  1. I don’t care about the Ekblad issue. Dude’s been on a cup team for 2 straight seasons. I can’t imagine his body has felt good for awhile so far PED usage is understandable. Stupid, but understandable

  2. Good podcast. Enjoyed it.

But as it comes to the discussion/thinking of Eklund/Smith/Celebrini of Landi.

Before making a judgment about how many points Eklund gets as compared to Smith.

Let's see what Smith looks like in two more seasons and then maybe you might have a be correct. IMO, Smith will average more points per season than Eklund.

Yeah, Eklund is a better two way player, but we have just scratched the surface of Will Smith and what he develops into might surprise everyone.

I think Smith gets a bad rap. IMO, he is doing great as a rookie and since January leads all rookies in points. As he did in the NCAA, he starts slow and builds throughout the season.

The real question is about next season, since we have not seen him play in consecutive seasons since his time with the NTPD program.

I do agree with Landi about Muk. He did better than a lot of people are saying but with this being his longest stretch of NHL games and him being as young as he is, he is doing just fine.

Like all rookies (and more exaggerated being a defenseman) development is not linear. He will have highs and lows, but overall he is getting better every game. To me anyways, it is noticeable.

Cags did well, as you all said, but his ice time was exaggerated due to him getting PP1 minutes.

When it comes to the defensive corps for next season, Ian mentioned it in a previous podcast. They have a lot of them signed through next season.

    LD: Ferraro, Pickles, Thrun, Muk
    RD: Liljegren, Desharnais, Thompson

That is seven. So, IMO, GMMG will make significant changes this defensive group for the better. How?

I don't know, but seeing as he has spent most of his life in hockey, been working in management for many years and has built a very good staff to assist him, I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he will make those improvements.

I thought at the beginning of the season, this was the start of the build. From what GMMG stated in his last presser, the Sharks were not. The situation is like this.

There is NO defenseman getting any real money other than Pickles (not a contract he had anything to do with) and none of them are signed past next season. He has tons of cap space, eight picks in the first two rounds of the next two drafts, and the deepest prospect pool in the NHL.

He has the ability to improve any part of the roster he sees fit (as long as there are players to acquire) and he stated that this was his plan. I am eagerly waiting to see this play out.

I think the defensive corps will change a lot. Players can be waived or moved as well as acquired.

However, Landi is smoking something if he thinks that GMMG moves down from his top pick. When has that ever been done? Schaefer has the projection to be a top pair D. And a different D than Dickinson.

Dickinson is the ONLY possible top pair D. Then there is Misa that would make our center depth the admiration of the league (in the future) or Martone that fills a need as a power forward.

Maybe he trades any of the other picks but his first?! Really? I want to smoke whatever Landi is because it is one hell of a mind bender.

Is Schaefer going to be ready the season he is drafted? Likely not, but that is irrelevant. No teams trades a top three pick and he is the one prospect that fills a BIG hole in the Sharks prospect pool that NO OTHER prospect in this draft can.

A number one defenseman. If he is there, they pick him 100%, but if not, then IMO Misa is second and Martone is third.
