Krebs instigator penalty – a great example of the rule working perfectly as designed

Krebs instigator penalty – a great example of the rule working perfectly as designed

Peyton Krebs decided to stand up for team mate Jiří Kulich after he was levelled by Brett Howden. He fought Howden and picked up an instigator penalty, which comes with an extra two minutes and a ten minute misconduct on top of the five minutes for fighting, for a total of 17 minutes in penalties.
Why are people so opposed to a player who delivers a clean check being protected from forced fighting?

  1. Its crazy that this penalty isn't assessed way more often considering the amount of times a clean check is immediately answered by a secondary teammate coming in and forcing a fight. It happens so often and usually officials just chalk it up to 5major for each player and nothing more (or off-setting minors for roughing in some cases)

  2. To continue your point, if it’s not a clean check, the hitter could be penalized for the hit, potentially earning more PIMs than the instigator of the fight.
