Boston Bruins Should be Sellers

Boston Bruins Should be Sellers

The Boston Bruins Don Sweeney spoke to the media and clearly indicated what he would do at the trade deadline.

I discussed which UFAs and RFAs he referred to and why Brad Marchand isn’t going anywhere.

  1. The B's are looking more and more like sellers. Unfortunately, they have been stuck with inconsistency, the injuries on the defense, and the teams they are chasing have gotten hot. It's not a bad idea to get something back on the upcoming UFAs and some of the value players on the team to get ready for next year.

  2. Would love to see Marchand traded as a rent-a-player, just to see the change in the Bruins without him. To me he just doesn't trust his line mates as if the player has the puck/player, he always goes to "help" out. Case in point the other night when he went in to "help" Coyle only to leave the opposing player wide open.

  3. Great analysis. Agree that Bs are likely stuck on 2 years for Marchand. Hard to go more. Also right on point with Fredrick, hes not hard to play against, doesnt cause havoc like a Tom Wilson or Hathaway. I saw Trent as a top 6 power forward 2 years ago, boy was I wrong.

  4. The entire team minus Pasta should be on the block, of course McAvoy and Lindholm will be tough moves, and players with a no trade clause will also be tough moves……

  5. While it's true the roster may look different after the deadline; it's sad that the biggest offenders for underperformance (Lindholm, Zadorov, Coyle) and safe with no risk of being moved. Less than a year into those Lindholm/Zadorov contracts and they already look like anchors that will weigh the team down for years, despite the rising cap

  6. "Make the playoffs" is a fallacy from before I was born 😂. Just squeaking into the playoffs only manages to pad the owners already overstuffed wallet. How many teams made the playoffs in the 5 to 8 slot in their conference and went on to win the Cup? 3? 4? Two of those were the LA King's and all of them were due to some ridiculous flukiness.

Finish top-4 in your conference or go golfing. In the NHL, draft picks are king. Barely making the playoffs is fool's gold.

  7. I'm not sure who they have to move. Well, that they want to give away. Unless they get obscene returns for them. LOTS of picks, but why would another team? Koepke is an asset, a solid 4th liner. Maybe Brazeau is a trade asset, as well. Funny thing, he did well before Sacco. I wonder if he's one of those that doesn't buy into Sacco?

From what I've heard, it sounds like there's an issue in the room. AND, about the only one who truly gets it, is Marchand. Sounds like others are not buying in. I'd resign Geekie, and Lohrei. As a D man, they always take longer to develop. Beecher, another good bottom 6. He works well in the Kastelic, Koepke line. Good chemistry there. but if anyone calls, the B's move him. Wohlstrom? Gone if they get a call. I've wanted to move Freddie forever. It's just that, the longer he's out there, the less he shows other teams. unless they can move him and he's one of those guys who benefits from new scenery.

All in all, sellers, but not Fire Sale. Not blowing things up. Sweeney has to know, he's on the hot seat.

  8. Sellers, remove the no move , no trade clauses from thier contracts. players seem to be holding more cards than the teams. this impacts parody through out the league.
Under preformers in business dont have those options Union or otherwise. they will lose players on waivers or simply let them go for nothing, as in the past. management is weak and unsure more times than not.

  9. I like Geekie, but we need picks and he'd be a great asset as a bottom 6 for someone looking to go deep. Same with Brazeau. As much as I like them in black and gold, I also like seeing these guys get a shot at going the distance.

  10. Finally comes the retool!
This has been 4 seasons late for me!

.With all due respect, I'd say be careful overvaluing Geekie. Anytime someone plays with Pasta their stats Spike and then they don't meet them again when they are not playing next to Pasta.
    Few exceptions like 63, 46 and 37.

This sounds critical of one of our most consistent players, but he misses a LOT of opportunities, open nets. I love what he does but there's an aspect of him that I don't like what he doesn't do

I think he gets the most high danger opportunities working with Pasta and he doesn't often bring them home.
There have been a lot of games I've seen where the score could have been higher. But we were not capitalizing on those high danger opportunities.

I'm sounding like I don't like geeky and that's absolutely not the case

Go ahead and Sign Marchand to the 4-year deal

2 years playing, the last 2 years sharpening skates , filling water bottles and cleaning the locker room

    😆

I'm not saying that to be disrespectful – they're going to have to change the locks to keep him out!

Actually, the over 35 contracts get very complicated. So I can't really speak to a four-year deal. Doesn't seem logical but… Nothing about Marchand has been logical nor typical his entire career.

No idea what's going to happen to the rest of the crew.. I hope everybody makes it to where they're happy.

    This was a great rundown.

  11. There isn't a single player on the roster that doesn't have a NMC or that is a UFA or RFA that would get them a 1st round pic aside from Marchand. If the Bruins don't blow it up now they will be stuck in mediocrity for years to come. Even if they got picks Sweeney has a poor track record on his draft picks. In the last 7 drafts he has not selected one player that has been a regular on the roster.

Fire Cam and Don and start over. They are going to be hamstring by bad contracts for the next 2-3 seasons. Pasta will be 29 next year and by the time they become competitive again he will be on the down side of his career and Marchand will be retired. There isn't anyone in the AHL that is a budding superstar. Time to blow it up.

  12. Good video my man. Would love another video on what or who you think they could get for some of these players. What type of players could we see in return as well as draft capital? Could Korpi be a guy they deal as well?

  13. What about trading Korpi for assets? He has been good, but bring up youth. Also, draft the current UMaine goalie!!! Almost of that team is available, as well.

  14. Whats important is we don't make stupid trades to salvage a bad season.
I think some teams could come shopping for Carlo as well and perhaps Coyle even. Would not rule out Korpisalo or Peeke generating some interest as well. These are all dispensable along with others.
My guess is they sign Marchand. I hope they don't move Lohrei. While he needs some serious work on his defensive game, he has shown he has great offensive potential and can be a game breaker.

I throw this in off topic. Why all the heat on Zadorov? He is our best plus minus guy LOL Yes, he has got a few more penalties in his exuberance to be what we wanted him to be, but 5v5 he has been solid. Did we bring him here expecting him to score and be a penalty kill specialist? Lindholm has been a bust for sure from what was expected of him and we are gonna have to hope he can get going in the future. He wins faceoffs, backchecks competently and is good on the penalty kill but his offense has certainly come up short.

  15. I like how you tiptoed around the possible Geekie trade. I feel I had my part on that in my last comment, haha. Yes I agree his numbers are inflated because of playing with Pasta but it goes both ways I think. And I agree that if his contract demands will be too high it wíll be better to trade him. But we'd still need someone who'd fill his exact role of doing the hard work with Pasta line. Because I don't see anyone in the current lineup who'd fill that role.

  16. Sweeney and Seabass are the reason this team is where it is. Yet somehow theyre still here ready to screw up the team even more. Coyle and his 5mill can go, freddy can go, brazeau cya, wahlstrom never shouldve been picked up. Coepke can go, peeke can move, resign geekie, lysel and merkulov shouldve been brought up weeks ago to finish this season and get more nhl time. Keep carlo and lohrei. Sweeney shouldnt be the one handling the future of this team. They had a 1st last year and what happened? They BLEW it on 7ft leterneau! Prep school league player! 2points this season! Maybe Liam greentree who was picked to go in the mid teens and was available to the bruins who has 100points this season in 54 games in the Ontario hockey league. Had over 90 last year and guess what? The very next pick hes scooped by the kings. So get all the picks you want, sweeney will screw it up just like last year.

  17. I dont know why they took Brazzeau off the 2nd line, well i do, it was to get coyle going. That 2nd line was at least pitching in, now Marchand is getting points on the pp but we get nothing from the 2nd and 3rd lines anymore…..

  18. The only real trade assets the Bruins have right now, that anyone would give them anything of value for that is, that they'd also be willing to move would be Frederic, Coyle, Geekie, Peeke and Korpisalo

You san say Marchand but unless he demands a trade, which is unlikely, he's not going anywhere

You can also say Brandon Carlo and hate him all you want to but the Bruins have nothing in PVD at right or left defense for that matter. He also makes next to no money in context of what the Cap will be next year so it would be quite surprising to see Boston move on from Carlo right now.

The Bruins needs offense badly and they're going to use their Cap Space on it next year, which is why I highly doubt Brandon Carlo gets moved

They aren't going to be able to find someone like him for what he makes and again, they have to spend the big money on offense next year, not overpaying the next Brandon Carlo

You can also say Pavel Zacha but the Bruins have nothing in PVD at center and they aren't exactly center rich at the big club level either.

Add to that he's Pasta's buddy and his salary isn't anywhere near a cap killer….. It sure seems like Pavel Zacha isn't going anywhere anytime soon

Don't even start in with the Swayman, McAvoy or Pasta trade nonsense as they are not trading any of those guys

Don't start in with the Hampus Lindholm, Nikita Zadorov and Elias Lindholm trade nonsense either as all of those guys have full NTCs, they are all over paid and they all have a lot of term left on their deals so like Sway, Mac and Pasta, those three aren't going anywhere

The rest? Beecher, Koepke, Wahlstrom, Tufte, Max Jones, Brazzeau, Callahan, Osterle, Wotherspoon…. None of those guys are worth anything around the league except maybe future considerations or 6th/7th round draft pick

So whatever re-tool there's going to be, it's going to have to be done in large part with nothing but the extra Cap Space they'll get next year and whatever they may get in any trades for Frederic, Coyle, Geekie, Peeke and or Korpisalo as I think those are the only guys that one, would be guys they'd move on from and two, actually have some kind of value around the league (so think at least something between 1st, 2nd and or 3rd round picks)

And as far as Peeke, Coyle and Korpisalo go… With all three guys having term and none of their salaries being too far out of bounds with the Cap going up next year, it seems trades involving any of them are more likely to happen in the off season.

Maybe some of the bottom of the roster fat gets moved for late round picks too (Koepke, Brazzeau, Beecher, etc)… but it seems more likely that only Frederic, Coyle, Peeke Geekie and Korpisalo have a chance of being moved for anything of value. Whether it's before the trade deadline or in the offseason

Again, it seems highly unlikely that they will be trading Swayman, McAvoy, Pasta, Zacha, Carlo, Kastelic, Lohrei, E. Lindholm, H. Lindholm, Marchand, Zadorov or Poitras

If they can't or won't move a good number of those higher end guys, there CANNOT be any rebuild in Boston because those types of players would have to be traded in order for Boston to both bottom out and to get a crap tone of assets in return to fuel a proper rebuild

So again, it's re-tool time with Cap Space and whatever Frederic, Coyle, Peeke Geekie and or Korpisalo may fetch in any potential trades.

You can say, and the Providence guys are going to be part of the re-tool too but there's not a single D-man in Providence that's a real NHL player next year and outside of Merkulov and Lysell, neither of whom have made any NHL impact yet, there's not any other forwards in Providence that project as scoring, Top 6 players in the NHL, just more bottom six, two-way types (Farinacci, Duran, Kuntar) and bottom of the roster D-men (Jackson Edward / Frederic Brunet) And it's highly doubtful any player playing in Providence this year, will have much of an impact in Boston next year either. Lysell may be a bust and I'm not sure the Bruins themselves believe in Merkulov the way they've handled him this year.

    Thanks Don Sweeney 🙂

  19. Get as many solid picks and prospects as you can for Frederic, Geekie, and Braz. Gotta. Sell high on Geekie, good player but slim shot he improves to the point totals needed of an actual number 1 center in the future. Need to put some faith in Lindholm and Zacha to figure it out and.

    Shop Beecher.

No reason to not have Lysell and Merkulov fill in the roster. Let the young guys get actual NHL time. This I feel has always been a problem with the Bs. Sometimes it seems they are too cautious with young players and destroy their confidence.

  20. Who is their best trade piece?Pasta!Trade him and rebuild. They are not even a playoff team and their so called 'prospects' are not panning out. They have a good defense, when healthy, but they desperately in need of scoring from anyone not named Pasta.Frederic,Geekie and Brazeau should also go.

  21. Thanks Cort. Good post.
If they move on from Wotherspon, Geekie, Trent and Brazeau…, who is playing?
Might as well go nuts and move EVERYONE.

  22. Only way I'd trade Freddy is if we get another tough guy in return. Kastelic is great, but I don't think he can fill our bruiser role quite yet

  23. After the 2015 draft is Sweeney really the guy that should be selling and then using those assets at the draft? He should be terminated for that draft alone.
