This is Mikko Rantanen. By all statistical accounts, he has been a top 5 player in the NHL over the last 5 seasons. Only Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, & Nathan MacKinnon have been more productive.
Yet, he just set an NHL record for the most points by a player who has played on 3 teams in 1 season. We break down his game & how he will fit into the Dallas Stars system.

Not sure this is accurate. There is no proof he told Carolina he would only play for 4 teams and they were not one of them. He said he said right there so I would be careful about what you report as facts. If the Carolina Hurricanes said that it could all be sour grapes and made up.
I am an Avs fan dating back to their first days in Colorado and it kills me that Mikko was traded. He was my #1 player in the Avs 2.0 pantheon of greats and it was beyond shocking when this trade happened. I for one totally blame the agent and his greed once the Draisaitl deal got done but hockey is business and we all know business has different priorities than the heart. minds and passions of hockey players and fans. It will be beyond devestating to see Mikko on the ice for the Stars in round one and while I wish him nothing but the best for his personal hockey achievements, I hope he goes into the off season early and often cause F*&K THE STARS!
Really good and fair analysis.
Imagine not taking the Toronto trade because your scared to bump into him later down the road for him to then just end up in Dallas anyway 😂😂
This ai generated content kind of sucks.
Mikko didn't do anything wrong. He didn't want to leave Avs and he didn't want to go to Carolina… But obviously the agent overplayed his hand.
Honestly Rants' problem in Carolina is that he was that he couldn't adapt to the heavy forecheck.. This video explains a lot of things well, but while the eye test showed him getting a lot of chances to score that just didn't go in, it also showed that he was just not a very good forechecker. In Carolina he would often try to keep playing in the Colorado style, letting others handle the entry while he finds the soft, high danger spots. That's effective in rush systems and he's so good at it that he still generated chances, but Carolina's system needs all 5 skaters to contribute to the forecheck, if one is slacking it doesn't work as well. When he did try to forecheck he was often beat to the puck or muscled off of it.
Honestly the irony of this all is that the one player Carolina had that probably would've played best with him…was the guy they traded to get him. Necas was the one guy they had that could consistently create his own entries and pairing him with Rantanen would have been absolutely lethal.
Huge suprise Miko didn't want to spend 8 fucking years, willingly, in North Carolina lmao
Here's the bottom line. Mikko wanted out of Colorado and wasn't happy with the direction they were going. They had been negotiating an extension for more than a year and couldn't come to an agreement. That was the first clue. Mikko wanted to go to Dallas all along in the offseason, but Cmac called his bluff and traded him. That was a temporary road block. Mikko made it clear to RB that he wanted nothing to do with the team.
Mikko used to be a team player but unfortunately that version is no longer with us. I've long forgiven Duchene, but I wish Mikko nothing but the best. He did this to himself, though. Don't blame the agent. Mikko was the problem.
No, we didn't make a mistake.
Most players of any sport want to play in Dallas.
The NHL is a business
ahem….two
As a Canes fan, this whole thing was just so crazy to me. I totally think that players should have say in where they go, and i understand he didn't want to be traded. Carolina wasnt a fit for him and thats fine, but i think it was disrespectful to the team and the fans to just… seemingly not try. So many players/families have sacrificed so much to live out their dreams of being in the NHL that it sounds crazy to think that someone wouldn't give it their all in their dream job. Maybe I'm still biased because of the media I consume as a Canes fan, but I think what he did was just overall not cool whether it was on him or his agent. I dont think he's a horroble dude or anything, but it was just incredibly frustrating to watch.
Avs fan here, I just cannot hate this man, he’s just so good, I wish him success in Dallas.
Mikko wanted to stay, but the Colorado GM didn't want him to stay.
You dont know anything. Typical umeeican.
Carolina blames their lack of preparation and investigation on Mikko
Is anybody really pissed off tho
Bull shit
Well, this is how NHL works….people are just items to sell….
it wasn't about money, it was that AVS didn't see a future with Mikko…look at how AVS looks now…Sakic etc knew what they were doing. don't blame Mikko because Mikko would have accepted even an 11 million deal. AVS didn't want to continue the story with Mikko
The much FASTER Jets or the Avs will DESTROY that slow, lumbering old Stars team in the playoffs.
am a leafs fan and am sore they weren't able to trade for him (as much as I don't wanna see Marner go – hes done here and everyone knows it)
Stan Bowman should have moved water and earth to get Rantanen. Dude is a champion, stud forward. Damn near unstoppable with a wicked skill set.
Super stoked to have a big high level forward and Finn to join my D Stars. Playing big teams in playoffs like Vegas, Colorado & Edmonton, you need big guys to deliver and absorb the pounding. I’m cautiously optimistic we’ll go deep again this year. Otter and the whole team needs to peak at the right time, like any team.
He has his rights as a pending UFA to consider signing anywhere he wants. It’s not like he decides where he gets traded to and he needs to sign and stay there. But he honestly didn’t need to outright say it which is why ppl are mad
''Rupey Hintz''
😂
Tulsky sent him to DAL to plant a cancer in their locker room and prevent them from winning the cup. 7-D chess.
