Should Flames Connor Zary Be Suspended for Hit on Canucks Pettersson?

During an intense battle for the final Wild Card spot in the West between the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks, Connor Zary took exception to a hit by Elias Pettersson on Nazem Kadri and delivered a hit to the head on Pettersson. Do you think Zary should be suspended?

  1. pettersson gave a clean hockey hit on kadri and was targeted by zary with an elbow to the head that concussed him and knocked him out of the game. what do think?

  2. Yeah he should, absolutely reckless hit on a 20 y/o guy. That's how you end careers, retaliation for a clean hit. Garbage as usual from the Flames

  3. Kadri needs to be suspended for watching his dump in 😉 He got caught watching and paid for it.

  4. There was no "kerffufal" after Pettersson's hit on Kadri; in fact, Zary nailed Pettersson 2-3 seconds after Kadri was hit.

  5. This one was worse than the McDavid cross-check on Garland. It needs to be the same suspension as McDavid and Meyers were given.

Was it Calgary that injured EP40 in his rookie season?
When Marcus Petterson was a rookie, did he get a dirty hit too? Is it a Petterson thing?

  6. NHL obviously had Calgary winning that one. Had to do everything in their power to get them a point. 👎 Vancouver was the better team. They had Quin Hughes on their radar as well.

  7. They got away with so much garbage in that game. Suspend him. It was a targeted headshot. Absolutely no reason for that.

  8. I am not sure what the issue with the hit was. That was actually a text book open ice body check which is how the game is meant to be played. If you watch the hit closely, Pettersen does not even run at the guy, he really just stands his ground. Kadri got up, what's the issue? Absolutely no need for a bitch ass response that quite possibly may have caused a serious injury to a very promising young player.

  9. Here are 2 comments I had posted on this, which "kind of" answers your question!!!

Follow-up to this prior comment … "Give credit to the officials. They actually called a penalty as sometimes the officials kind of miss these kind of hits (though there are several of them on the ice), or the player being plowed into the glass from behind, but never, ever missing the stick in the gloves for a millisecond for the all-important 'hooking' call.
Anyway, another bad look for the NHL, some guy I (and surely many other fans unless you are a Flames fan or play hockey pools, of which it is a no on both counts for myself) never heard of with a 1970s NHL/WHA-like cheap shot to a young up and coming Canucks d-man, important to the team down the stretch. Let's see if the league even sends this Flames player a text message to say 'please refrain from this roller derby-type kind of activity', let alone giving him the suspension he is so worthy of."

Now we add: Can you see the NHL official in the "hearing", "call", or whatever, going to him: "And who are you exactly? Remind us once again." … Just when you thought it could not get more sadly comical than Brock Boeser being knocked out of the line-up by a 1-goal scorer!!! along comes a guy who if it was the days of hockey card collecting, the only relevance he would serve was to fill out the collection, as no one other than those in the city he played in would know who he was!

  10. The league itself is at fault for not having calls made that are as dangerous as this. Instruct the referees to call this crap and they will. I agree that this was a dangerous hit that was meant to hurt someone. The entire NHL needs to rethink penalties calling. The after whistle scrums need to be called and we will start to see results that make it hockey again.

  11. WHAT A DIRTY HIT AND PLAY BY ZARY, PETTERSSON LAID A CLEAN HIT ON A DIRTY HITTER IN KADRI, AND ZARY STILL HIT HIM AND JUMPED ON TOP OF HIM! WTF.

  12. Yep, complete non-hockey play, deliberate contact to the head, and also goes back at him when he's down which reinforces that it was intentional.

  13. Great summation Jesse ..yes poor response by the Canucks – for now. Next game between these two could be a brawl !

  14. D-petty has become a steal of the draft beinf a 3rd rounder but already an nhl caliber dman

  15. Without a doubt that’s a suspension. It’s pathetic when guys attack players for clean hard hits. Take a number and hit him later on in the game.

  16. Minimum five game suspension. We don't yet know how badly Junior Pettersson is injured. I am a believer that if a dirty, obvious pre-meditated play injures an opponent, the at-fault player should sit out for as long as the injured player is hurt. That would be fair. If Junior is out the remainder of the year, Zary should sit the year, if it ends his career, oh well you can go pump gas. This is coming from a guy who was a fan of Todd Bertuzzi.

  17. 2-3 games ain't crap for hits like this. there's no motivation for the players to stop if they're only gonna miss a couple of games. don't care about his lack of history. the punishment for hits to the head has to be punitive for change to happen.

  18. So sick of little punks that sucker punches players! It seems players are not fearing the couple of games suspesion they can get. They think they can get away with just punching or cross checking players without the puck as retaliation or whatever. They should get like twenty games if they make a play like this! Get it into your little head, you can't do this to other players! Anything that has the chance of being career ending like this. Also I would want to see something like an eye for an eye suspension. That if you make an illegal dangerous play like this and you end someone's career, you yourself should be banned from ever playing in the league again. For example if you cross check a player in the neck and he gets paralyzed from it, you are gone for ever from the NHL.

  19. This isn't that different from kadri in the playoffs with Toronto. I'd prefer a longer suspension, but 2 is probably what we get
