PED's are in all professional sports, theres so much money on the line. Its also an arms race between all these new drugs and testing, its always funny when the olympics goes back and tests samples years later and 90% of the samples test positive
You’re getting payed an easy 6 figures per year to play a sport you love very much (hopefully) and have free medical care. Why would you do anything to potentially mess that up? To have all of that, I would be constantly asking my team doctor(s) if and when I could have a single can of beer.
I think it was a mistake. A guy like Ekblad, who's been in the league a very long time, isn't gonna suddenly start doping. He owned it, I hate it for him, but this isn't Jon Jones.
So suspended for the remainder of the season but will be available to play in the playoff after drug use/doping? He'll be back just in time like Mathew. What a joke
Pinto got a full season for a friends gambling that got cut in half….. Guess gambling pays more than supplements because you can use PEDs easy in the NHL past an ok olympics level but to an acceptable standard
I'm much bigger of an MMA/Boxing fan than I am Hockey so I'll share my opinion since PEDs run rampant in MMA and the testing is extremely scrutinous. Tainted supplement is the oldest trick in the book and immediate scapegoat for everyone that gets caught, in this case Ekbald. According to ESPN in 2018 "A maximum of 60 players are tested in the offseason, and they are selected randomly. Every team is subject to teamwide, no-notice testing once during training camp and once during the regular season" – this is not nearly enough. There are some fighters and boxers who get tested 10-20 times before a fight, and only compete 1-3 times per year… not 82.
George Laraque said years ago "First, you just have to notice how some talented players will experience an efficiency loss as well as a weight loss every four years, those years being the ones the Winter Olympics are held"
"In the following season they make a strong comeback; they manage a mysterious return to form."
The Olympics have some of the most if not the most scrutinous PED testing in all sport organizations. The people in charge of the testing are always behind the curve of the people creating new PEDs and new ways to skirt the testing. Grigory Rodchenkov is the former head of Russia's national anti-doping laboratory exposed the existence of a state-sponsored doping program. There is literally MILLIONS of dollars of government money going into protecting these athletes from anti doping testing. There is a great documentary called "Icarus" where Rodchenkov speaks about Russia's PED use and antidoping.
In the NHL, the players have the millions of dollars to spend on skirting anti-doping themselves.
In short, NHL needs more scrutinous testing and we'll have to see what substance Eck tested positive for and how much was in his blood before we can judge him. Players do not need to look like body builders to be on PEDs, look at Anderson Silva's physique for example.
Honestly I'm so tired of all of this moral grandstanding when it comes to PEDs. Not saying Eck is specifically, I just mean the general public.
I wish it was allowed so it could be regulated safely and then everyone can make their choice.
There's substances that are dangerous and shouldn't be allowed, there's amounts and abuse of other substances that are dangerous, but there's plenty that is fine to use if you're being monitored.
The horrific injuries and the amount of injuries that can occure in some sports is wild. We're literally holding back athlete recovery and we're totally fine with them having the mobility of an 80year old and reduced quality of life by like 45-50 in retirement so we can feel better about them being "clean" or not?
I think Ekblad is wrong because he broke a rule other people follow. But I think the rules and the mentality behind them are more wrong. Also, the sports are better I care more about the recovery and quality of life in retirement.
Meanwhile the NFL and NBA pretend that they care and have specicic tests, on prescheduled days, the samd day every year. Just say it's allowed and regulate it instead of pretending to do something and letting players go wild behind the veil.
I feel like PEDs is more common in secondary leagues like AHL, rampant in KHL, ECHL, etc. I feel like it is less common in junior/NCAA. And in the NHL I'm not sure because it is in-house testing. The NHL does random testing which is good if your goal is to catch people, where as other leagues have clearly scheduled, infrequent tests.
So, if they only have gotten 6 or 7 guys (Theodore, Horcoff, Schmidt, that russian kid, Ekblad and couple others) in a 30 year span with random testing, that suggests low use in the NHL.
Unless they're sweeping stuff under the rug and choosing who to punish like the IOC does.
Either way, PEDs is a witch hunt that needs to end in most, if not all, sports. Just monitor and regulate. At least, and especially for, things to aid recovery from injury.
Could be a blessing in disguise. He's had some brutal injuries, seemingly every year for the last half decade. Give him some time off before the playoffs to not just rest but get off the grind of always coming back from injury. Having time off without having to train back up is great for his mental health. I know he'll come back strong and ready for a deep playoff run.
What is Trump a New Car Salesman now? Musk better with out he'll tank his company next just like the stock market. Of coarse it will be Joe Biden fault .
It's probably a SARM, or another low profile steroid for muscle recovery, the NHL is frustratingly weird about this stuff from what I know of it; we all know pro football players are all on something, and most of the best hockey players are taking SOMETHING in the offseason to bulk, and probably take trace amounts through the season, but they've also hit someone for trace amounts of a chemical when the only things the player was on were prescribed by a team physician – in this case the drug they were on was occasionally known to carry like .1% of a banned substance.
I remember 10 years ago in NFL, there was a suspension because of a diuretic being in something and the players didn't know it was in there or that the ingredient was banned, so he could be "innocent" but ultimately guilty case

“Take their cup away,” oilers fans saying that right now 😂
It’s always a shock and a mistake lol.
These guys are all taking shit to recover or enhance their performance.
lol weed would not be a PED. It would be more, i got to get a penalty so i sit on my ass. MAN lol

It's not "unfortunate" in any way. It is the rules. Break the rules and pay the price. Very simple.
A cheater is a cheater! You can call him stupid all you want. People will do just about anything for millions of dollars
drugs are bad, m'kay?

Cheated to beat the Oilers. I guess that makes Edmonton the real Cup Champions.

makes me wonder , how many panthers tooked peds at stanley cup play-offs
LeBron does this, yet the NBA refuses to penalize him

Amazed all the teams the Panthers beat on the road to their Stanley Cup are not screaming to have an asterisk engraved on the Cup.

Adderal.
peptides for sure

Nothing on Rantanen being a back poking snake?

You can crosscheck someone in the mouth and get 6 games, you take enhancing chemicals and get 20, how many games for weed or coke
You mean a fortunate story
Off season almost every one is in some stuff.

It was laced creatine or protein powder obviously, not intentional at all.
The guy is a crackhead
So many bots in these comments
What is Trump a New Car Salesman now? Musk better with out he'll tank his company next just like the stock market. Of coarse it will be Joe Biden fault
.
He knew exactly what he was taking and why he was taking it. He should also be eliminated from the playoffs. Sorry If anything this benefits Florida
So the league promotes and shows constant commercials for sports betting, but a guy rubs muscle relaxer on his balls and gets 20 games. Okay!
So they are okay with players taking painkillers (Opiates) but arent okay with using PED/ Peptides to recover from injury

And yet Ovi gets tested only at camp. Test Ovi and don’t be surprised if he fails.
Imagine hitting a bump and then bumping your way into the playoffs because they already caught you for it…double jeopardy rule
It's fucked up that the NHL won't let you take the drugs that best help you recover from being injured while on the job.
The NHL is so messed up. I understand this is a problem but I have seen some real questionable hits that go nothing. 20 games?!?
I remember 10 years ago in NFL, there was a suspension because of a diuretic being in something and the players didn't know it was in there or that the ingredient was banned, so he could be "innocent" but ultimately guilty case
"I swear I thought it was just a cigg!"
Don't we want to see not only the best players but all professional athletes using performance enhancing drugs? How great would that be.
So he cheated…
Why 20 games? Other sports levy quite long suspensions.
"taking something" ???
Love ur vids eck
Florida panthers fan base is so lame 😂 I went to a lightning vs panthers game and they have 0 energy in that stadium…. Mostly bandwagons fans
You try to play your ass off for 80+ games. Then, let me know how you feel after getting your ass beat.
cycling fan here so i know this is a textbook excuse
With the title I thought it would be another cry for the poor Russians who can't compete internationally under their flag.
🇺🇦💪
NHL allows marijuana use now, they don't test for that
avalanche fans have already been through this 😉
