1:10 It may appear at first that making loads of trade deadline week moves will help significantly NHL teams looking to go on deep playoff runs. In the end, however, good teams have point production from each of their lines AND know how to lock down games. Following the 4 Nations tourney, the Oilers and Leafs have had significant difficulty in some games locking down leads.
Good teams also know of a need to transition good regular-season play into the postseason and execute accordingly. The 2022-23 Bruins, as this season’s Winnipeg Jets are still strong candidates to do, won the President’s Trophy, only to flame out in the first round in seven games against a much more determined Florida Panthers’ team that would go on to qualify for that season start in the final and win the Stanley Cup the season after that.
The Jets have only a single post-2018 playoff series win: a 2021 sweep of the Oilers that had occurred when those two teams and the remaining Canadian ones had been placed into the NHL’s North Division due to travel restrictions put in place by the Canadian Government that, due to Covid having remained a pandemic throughout that season, had pretty much banned travel into that country by NHL teams prior to the Stanley Cup semifinals. Will this season be one the Jets finally have that 1st post-2018 playoff breakthrough? The Oilers are the only Canadian NHL team to have an active streak of consecutive seasons with playoff series wins.
