The Rantenan trade from Colorados perspective is interesting because clearly they wanted to keep him. What I think happened was not only did Drai get 14mil with the same agent but also the fact that January wasn't a good month for Colorado making them realize they have bigger issues. As I genuinely think if they had won 4-5 more games that month Rantenan might still be in CO.
So either keep a great player that's beloved by us and the fans but is currently trying to bleed us dry and continue losing every other game. Or get a serviceable replacement with some depth pieces and a bit of extra cap space to boot and see if that turns our season around.
Because if they didn't trade Rantenan I doubt they'd have gotten players like Nelson,lindgren,vacey,coyle, and obviously Nećas and Drury. So they clearly got the depth they were looking for which was one of the main reasons they made that trade in the first place.
CP's chronic misfortune and his Zen-like acceptance of it compared to "There is no God!" panic of everyone else around him fits perfectly with Christopher Titus's "shit hitting the fan" bit from his early days lol. Came here to get hurt by the Rantenan trade talks. I think the biggest thing people are missing, is Necas wasn't exactly happy with the Hurricanes. I personally think they sent Necas for max deal, and see if Rantenan would warm up to Raleigh/Hurricanes. Then a an opportunity to trade deadline him. Does it make them better for WIN NOW, on paper, nope. But there is a window, and there are a few more years left. Lots of teams emptying their futures for win now mode.

Something else to consider is that Rantanen is basically joining team Finland… Miro, Esa, Hintz, and Granlund. As good as Mackinnon is, he’s also pretty uptight no? Doesn’t he like get mad at his teammates for eating carbs? lol I can see Mikko being really happy in Dallas with so many of his boys from Finland.
I think what isn’t being talked about enough with Mikko is – he may have been open to signing. That may not have been a lie. Watching him play down there looked like watching a caged bird. That’s not saying it’s a bad system – just that it was a bad fit. And he has the right to decide he doesn’t want to spend 8 years doing the dump and chase thing. Also more realistic as to why he looked like he was coasting – he didn’t fit. And you guys were right about Necas. The Avs power play dramatically improved with him and holy shit he is electric with Mac. Once they really figure eachother out, look out. Gonna be better than Mac/mikko. Not saying he’s a worse player…. Just Necas was a fantastic shakeup.
