How could events of trade deadline impact Marner’s contract negotiations this summer?

Reports surfaced on Saturday that the Maple Leafs discussed trading Mitch Marner to Carolina for Mikko Rantanen at the deadline, but Marner didn’t want to waive his no-move clause. How could these events impact his contract negotiations with Toronto this summer? TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button joins SC with Jay Onrait to discuss.

  1. To al the folks saying Marner does not perform in the playoffs, please explain why he has more playoff points that Matthews, Tavares or Nylander.

  2. This highlights the main problem with our fans, people are only leafs fans not HOCKEY fans! Everyone saying Marner is overrated, overpaid etc.. are out of touch. You can't just replace Mitch, there's not 3 or 4 same caliber players just floating around out there. Scott gomez now that's over paid

  3. Mitch has something to prove this playoffs. He (MM) wants to put the cherry on his 4-Nations Cup cake. 😊🤘

  4. You’re right, it’s not Marner’s job to take a hometown discount but it also wasn’t Crosby’s job to take 8M for literally his entire career but the penguins got 3 cups in 8 years

  5. craig b is kissing butt's of tml media and fans. Marner has been un proven in playoffs and stuggles to bring his game to next level much like austin M .

  6. I agree . the leafs can be screwed by this. they'll have 11 million to play with next year . but having Mitch walk without getting anything would be a failure.

  7. If we lose Marner i 100% blame Toronto Sports Media. TSN and Sportsnet both suck and I don't blame him for wanting out. JFC guys give it a rest.

  8. He's right, they may have damaged their chances of bringing him back and you're not going to find another player available at his level in free agency, someone who can score, play PP, kill penalties, play 22 minutes a night. Thinking you can replace him with a couple of guys who make 5ish million won't come close to replacing what he gives you. What was it, $9M combined the off-season before for Tyler Bertuzzi & Max Domi? That makes for a better lineup?

  9. Button is definitely paid by the marner camp to prop him up. He says he was a seleke finalist but that was half a decade ago and it was a joke, 16 ranked as low as 70th innthe league a few defensive categories that year. Button says hes lived up to his contract, thats another joke. He’s definitely over paid, they call him 100 point player when did he ever get 100 points? Lol Leafs have to smooth it over with marner? No Marner has to smooth it over with Toronto, his agent has made him a villan in keaf land. Hiding the team for ransom, refusing to have contract talks in season, brushing the leafs off when they ask them to engage in contract talks, saying mitch is good to test free agnecy what you want the leafs to do sit on their hands and desperately wait for marner to take his sweet time to tell them if hes coming back? Team is in win niw mode they don't have time for marners bs narcissistic and egotistical selfish taxtics. Button says you cant replace a player like marner, hes right, there is nobody in the league who is more toxic, greedy and self centred than mitchell marner.

  10. This is why no trade clauses are painful for team mangement, but does make sense from a player situation to protect themselves.

  11. It’s not my money….🇨🇦😂. So many whiners and fans complaining about him in the playoffs…pretty sure they are others who haven’t lived up to expectations, but got contract money anyway. Ha. 👍🤪🏳️‍🌈

  12. It’s a business at the end of the day and when you have an opportunity to sign a similar player who in my opinion is a better player and definitely a better playoff performer you gotta go for it. Mitch is gonna get paid we all know that but his playoff record is is biggest blemish. You can’t blame them for trying to upgrade

  13. McDavid extension and marner coming to Edmonton. I could see both McDavid and marner taking slight “pay cuts” to play in Edmonton especially since McDavid and marner are already buddies and which team is closer to a cup? Edmonton is the obvious choice plus marner wouldn’t have to deal with Toronto media which is horrible.

  14. Mitch's performance in the 4 Nations Cup raised his value and proved he is a big game player when surrounded by other elite talent

  15. Players that WANT to be here, don't do what he and his agent are doing
    Period. Guaranteed he walks!

  16. @tsn Stop running this story. He has stated he wants to sign a leaf. Trust him, and quit Badgering him. You are the problem, be more creative with your stories and quit rehashing the same bullshit

  17. It’s not confusing, as a gm you have to explore every opportunity when you have a player who refuses to sign. Leafs signed Willy no problem so what’s marners problem
