Joe Veleno was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for Petr Mrazek and Craig Smith. Mazur was added to IR, Shine was recalled. Wings drop 5th straight, with poor goaltending and brutal collapse in Washington. Is Yzerman feeling the heat? #LGRW

Hope Yzerman enjoyed Jake Walman being interviewed Saturday on Hockey Night in Canada After Hours, after Edmonton’s win (Walman an assist) over Colorado.
Stevie has to go! He did nothing at the trade deadline! The players are fed up the fans are fed up! They are right, back where they are before Todd took over! All Yzerman cares about are draft picks. The old boys network has to go!
Defence sucks – blame goalies. Brain
Kirk Maltby is the leader of pro scouting. He might be one of the boys but he needs to go
😵💫
it's not that we are just overpaying free agents. Slight overpays if they identified the correct free agents to sign would be fine. There have been plenty of free agents the last 3 years and very cheap trades that this could easily be a playoff team at this point without giving up a single prospect. Detroit simply has not made the correct moves in free agency. Trading for Brian Dumoulin for a 2026 4th round pick @ $3 million expiring contract obviously would have been a much better move than overpaying Gustafsson 2 million x 2 coming off a league minimum contract with the Rangers. Kovacevic for a 2026 4th rounder would have solidified the 2nd pairing and could have been resigned. Both of these guys could have been flipped at the deadline for 2nd rounders or more. We have not taken on any contracts and turned and sold at the deadline for assets. its poor roster management. If this team would have signed Dylan Strome 2 years ago, signed Ryan OReilly for 4x 4.5 instead of Compher for 5.25×5. traded a 3rd for Kappo Kakko, 4th or 5th for Dumoulin and Kovasevic. given Philadelphia a 6th 3 deadlines ago for JVR or just signed him for 2x 1 million. This would not just be a marginal playoff team but perhaps even a dangerous one. These are simple moves that even a decent GM could have turned this team around in a very short time without costing any prospects or high picks. 2 centers, 2 blue-liners, 2 wings, all with size and defensively responsible. PLAYOFFS.
Oh no. The angry people on x who know everything may leave the Red Wings fan base. What a loss.
Yzerman & the whole scouting staff (all of his buddies) needs to be FIRED!!!
Past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior. I have zero faith that Yzerman can build a championship team because the pro scouting is such a massive fail.
Wings saved $17M under the cap to sign Mrazek! Moved Husso to bring in Mrazek! Either way, the team is no better. Veleno is worth 2 players where Walman have to add a pick to take him off our hands? Tired to hear "Wait 'til next year". Wings not showing they want to win yet. I don't trust this next off-season to do anything to improve this team. Cat has been the only signing to do so. No one wanted Kane and we got him cheap, so if there was a mistake not much lost, but otherwise no signings of note. 🏒
Year after the rest of the league gets better, we make no moves.
The contracts you don't like are the time line. When guys like chariot ect are no longer here and youth has pushed them out then we are a team that can push. That was the plan, build the prospects, let them develop to take the spots, trade the next wave for the push. 2 more years before you see a big push at the deadline.
Pro scouts at it again
Marner and Bennett will be wings this offseason and everyone will love yzerman again
Yzerman has been mediocre at best and is stunting the growth of cossa as mzarek and Talbot are goalies under contract next yr
It is MORE than acceptable to look hard at the less than "lackluster" GM performance.
At this point just send Laggesson back to GR, Sit Holl, and call up Wallinder. Let the rookie make the mistakes and learn from it instead a veteran making the mistake when they SHOULD be better then that.
mayby taking Mrazek was the sweetener. Chicago required him to be part of the deal. Just like we would use Holl
Three goalies is so weird 😂
I'd rather have Cossa as third… or James Reimer back… instead of Mrazek. Bringing up young guys has been a tremendous delay. Not sure why guys like Kasper, Burger, Elmer werent brought up sooner. Seems to be no clear plan on timelines for the young players currently on the Grifs. Building a solid core base of the francise isnt apart of the future strategic planning it sure seems. Reactive vs. proactive approach to building a solid NHL team… Really a diservice to the players and the fanbase invested in the hopes of a playoff run…
Craig Smith on PP2? What are you smoking Brian
You guys want Yzerman to give up assets to improve the team, yet you don't want them to get stuck in the middle. How are they going to get stuck in the middle when they have the best and deepest prospect pool in the league? How is keeping their 1st/2nd round picks and prospects going to get them stuck? The teams that get stuck are the one's trading those assets in a desperate attempt to get better.
You really want them to be more like Ottawa? They trade the 7th and 39th overall pick for Debrincat, look how that turned out. A 1st and two 2nd rounders for Chychrun? How did that turn out? A 1st for 31 year old Ulmark who they then signed for 8.25 million a year before he ever even played a game for them and a year in advance. Now he only has a save percentage of .909%.
That is how you get stuck in the middle. If Brady Tkachuk demands a trade they are going right back to rebuild mode having never made the playoffs during that entire stretch.
You guys just need to be patient and have a little foresight. Seider, Raymond, Edvinsson, Kasper is already a very good core. Wait a year or two when Cossa, ASP, Danielson and Buchelnikov are on team. Plenty of other promising players/prospects too. Soderblom, Mazur, Augustine, MBN, Finnie, Buium, Wallinder.
The trade reasoning: 1. Next year market for available goalies looks thin, likely to lose Lyon in free agency (should have been traded). Mrazek brings experience and is solid. 2. Craig Smith is a here for a year, fills a needed slot right now, likely gone after the season. This is essentially dumping Veleno's cap hit. (Another cap casualty resulting from bad contracts that Yzerman has signed (Holl, Copp, Compher, Tarasenko).
What you guys are describing is how a team becomes a poverty franchise because they simply don't WANT to spend.
Other than the players Yzerman has signed to long term contracts(Larkin, Raymond and Seider) and the rookies coming up from GR, there is nobody tradeable for an asset. This is on Yzerman because he brought them in, then signing them to terrible contracts. Mrazek is another waist of cap space. I'm sure we could have resigned Lyon for 2 million for another year. Mrazek is a downgrade to Lyon period on top of waisting 2 million of cap space next year on the difference. Detroit has to go for the bigger fish and pay them. Sstop waisting cap space on fringe players who don't work out.
Mrazek is a more aggressive goalie, detroits goalies are not challenging the shooters, so it kind of makes sense, but mrazek does have a history of over pursuing so…
Guys, it takes 2 to tango. They can't acquire talent that doesn't want to come here. They're developing homegrown talent to make the team more appealing to high end free agency talent for the right price. You see it with Rantannen. He was willing to take less to play in Dallas because of the talent that would be around him. I think the big acquisition is coming, the team is getting better naturally and it's the right players making the push for it.
You guys killed it. You can't draft your way to reach where the Floridas and Torontos and Dallases are at now. That elite talent is not gonna be accessible via the draft. You have to look elsewhere.
And you'll have to pay a price to do it. If you clutch your pearls because you don't like the price, this team is doomed and we'll have to rebuild the rebuild.
Omg I do the same thing turn my tweet notifications off during games.
Stevie y probably regretted the walman and trade and now is stingy and snakebitten with our prospects and picks.
This makes me wonder about the direction for next season and beyond. Need Cossa to prove himself in a backup role to push the rebuild forward… Yzerman continues to make patch short term moves over and over that slow the rebuild.
I think this might be partly a Chris Illitch issue. He he beyond cheap and just wants to collect his money from the toys he’s inherited from Daddy. I think he may be limiting Steve financially.
I wish you guys could be in the media rooms asking these harder questions to the players and coaching. I'm tired of seeing mid to low tier talent come in.
They should have gotten Chicago to retain half of Mrazek's contract.
Yzerclown continues to show that he doesn't have the mental acumen to be a GM.
What you guys are forgetting is on day one he said they were building through the draft that was the plan and he said it was gonna take a while. I’m annoyed too, but Brian saying asset management we’re not trading first and top prospects for a basic ass players doesn’t make any sense
Yzerman said at the beginning of the season that a win this year would be growth from within:
1.) Kasper has grown a ton
2.) Edvisson has grown a ton
3.) Johansson has grown a ton
Playoffs were a long shot at Game 1 this year, they were near impossible at Christmas, and we are in the mix (I don’t say that with hope they’ll make it), and some of our young guys have taken big steps.
McClellan has this team playing to their potential. It’s up from here, because that’s all they’ve done since Christmas.
Why not bring Cossa up; "trial by fire"?
Save us Mrazek
Conveniently missing Yzerman saying we aren't trading our young guys and draft picks. And they wanted more than one year. Did you watch the press conference?
Joe Veleno lacks the aggression needed to be a good NHLer.
