i'd take Willy over Marner anyday. especially playoff time. let Marner walk this summer, get some 12 million dollar grit. not saying Willy is the grittiest player in the league but he will at least fight along the boards and yes, even go in first for the puck. Marner just will not take a hit.

Leafs should look a Deferred Compensation Contracts for JT and Marner if give Marner a 7 years at 13.5m aav and deferred 1.5m of it and bring down 12m aav and JT at 7 years at 7m aav deferred 2m of it and bring it down to 5m aav just like Jake McCabe and Frank Vatrano contracts

Marner already hustles more than most on the team. He has the aggression of Domi, the hands of Mathews, and patience with the puck to lure other teams to him, allowing Nylander and Mathews to get any goals. I'm personally tired of seeing someone as gifted as Nylander constantly coasting, not hustling for the puck, never digging in the corners or finishing a check,
I could see Grier taking a big swing at Marner in FA. He has to get us Sharks fans a good player to build around Celebrini and Smith.

you could write so many books about the trades that didn't happen at the trade deadline over the years . over the years you hear so many stories about this player or that player almost being moved then something happen the deal didn't get done for what ever reason . I don't remember the trade Deadline and i forget the 2 teams they worked out a deal the problem something with the money and i remember there was National game on TV on that night and they said the what 2 teams it was had a deal in place and the NHL knew what players will be traded but something about the money the trade happen at almost around 10 pm that night .then the next season the same thing almost but it wasn't as long and the deal never happen because the team couldn't work out the cap numbers .
Dubas didn’t do anything negative in regards to McCann. He aquired him for a 4th which ultimately resulted in the leafs being able to keep Kerfoot. Obviously would rather McCann and that’s what the leafs intention was but both were unprotected and the expanding team selected McCann.

Once Marner leaves, this team is done, has no chance to do much as he has the most playoff points, and Nylander and Matthews dispear in post-season. Also, he is the main setup guy during the season.
They should of made major changes to this core after the bubble habs collapse.

Big Leafs blunder, I think. There was almost no chance Marner would agree to waive his no trade. Now there is a better chance Marner will walk or even ask for more.

I think if Mitch has a good playoffs hes earned 13m, thats the going rate to play in this market. (hes a top 10 player in this league) if he has a poor playoffs then we might be having a more difficult question. Asking Mitch to waive his rights is a big deal and has the possibility of tainting negotiations. But winning cures all. If we do well in the playoffs (cup would be great, but 3rd rnd would also be nice at this point) negotiations will be friendlier. (probably)

I think your wrong about leafs asking mitch to waive will turn Marner negative , i think it actually shows Marner that Treliving is willing to walk away
