Very sad as a sharks fan but still trusting Mike Grier 🙏
Staios had himself a deadline. Cozens and Zetterlund would be 2nd and 3rd for Ottawa in 5v5 scoring this season. Staios clearly assessed 5v5 scoring as the biggest area of concern, and he addressed it.
Sens fan here. Love this trade…
W for the Sens indeed.
This makes sense for the sharks they get a second and a 21 year old center in Zack Ostapchuk. He could get a lot of ice time on their third line right now
Dam sharks dropped the ball here
This is a better return then the Norris trade
Today for Ottawa:
Out:
Norris
Gregor
JBD
Gregor
In:
Cozens
Zetterlund
Gilbert
Robins
4th round pick
They get a Buffalo second and lose their own so that's a wash. That's a solid deadline in my mind.
They reported contract talks didn't go well, I agree they could have waited and not a A+ return, but I trust Grier
Cozens and Zutterlund are now 2nd and 3rd in hits on the team now.
This definitely helped lessen the Norris gut punch. Nothing against Cozens, as I think he’ll be great, but Norris was loved here, even though he’s made of wet newspaper.
Kuzmenko to Kings! Gotta be the 3 K line! Kopitar, Kempe and Kuzmenko!
Hey Guys,
I am a Zetterlund fan too but, I think we are seeing a confluence of things you touched on. One Zetts probably wanted a long term deal maybe not an 8 x 8 but, probably something like 5-7 years at market value for him which I would guess is roughly $5 plus million a year. Roughly. Mike Grier said at the beginning of the season that the Sharks are not at a place in the rebuild where it makes sense to go spend max money and term for star players. His words were almost verbatum "3-4 years deals in the 4-5 million range." Basically Tafolieque style contracts.
Also, I think big picture/long term Grier wants his new core to be closer in age say no more than 22ish. Zetts is 25. I suspect that in the off season or before the trade deadline next season Ferraro will be traded also for the same reason (age). Also, lets face it, in SJ Zetts is a top 6 forward for lack of a better option. On a good team Zetts is probably a 3rd line trigger man with good speed, size and a reasonable 200' game. At 25 and after multiple NHL seasons it is debatable how much ceiling Zetterlund has left in his game? I think Zetts is still going to continue to grow as a player but, I am not sure he is going to be much more than he has shown these last two seasons.
You guys also touched on the well regarded Sharks prospects pool which most experts agree is among the best in the league if not the best. All Grier has done this season is add to the pool so its even better now. We have another full hand of picks for this draft including a fairly high pick if we are lucky to add to the pool. At some point the Sharks have to create a viable path for this growing pool of talent to compete amongst themselves for a roster spot and the system is already full and after this draft it will be bursting at the seams.
Most of those prospects are not going to be really ready to go in the NHL next season but, some will Gushin, Bordello, etc.. Perhaps one of our prized prospects will break through next camp we will see? Those young guys don't all expect to make the roster but, there needs to be room for 1 or 2 or the rest are going to start getting bitter. Watch Brodie Brazael's recent interview with Eklund and here him talk about how he felt being sent down his firs few years. Ask Thrun why he wanted out of Anaheim.
If we are going to mostly build via the draft and Grier has talked at length about his desire to create upward pressure in the Sharks system from young talent forcing their way to the top some space must be made. Its just math….wait..I suck at math. Does that invalidate every argument I just made? hahaha
Lastly, I will point out that pretty much EVERY trade Grier has made it seems like the experts are all underwhelmed and the fans are bitter with cries of "We should have gotten more for _____." Personally, I am not convinced that Zetts was worth more than we got. I love Zetts and will miss him but, I doubt very much if any team would have been willing to part with a first for him. Would you guys have given a first for Zetts? I think the best Grier could manage was a 2nd and a couple of prospects which is roughly equal to firstish value.
My hope for the immediate future is that the Sharks get super lucky again and win the lotto and pick Schaeffer first. We need more high quality NHL D-men and Schaeffer seems to be the complete package. I am also hoping that Grier will put a package together to trade up for Misa. He would be a great addition to our forward pool.
Regardless boys we are still in the early days of rebuilding our core and there is going to be a lot more moves to discuss in the ensuing years as Grier finds what he is looking for. Thanks for the video boys.
Cheers,

I think that’s a bloody good day for us Sens.
Leafs eat corn the long way bunch of bums
Sens cooked they have a good summer they could take the Bruins spot in the East for a couple years hate to say it as well as the red wings if they can add.
Zetterlund next to Stützle is going to make him even better. What a move by Staios!!
Sharks fan here, miffed by this one. I wonder if the negotiations were not going well (as Jesse stated) but they were too far apart..then possibly if arbitration went south he might have been offer sheeted!
Did not trade anyone else.
Some Mikko leaves Colorado for the Huge money and ends up getting exactly what Colorado was offering, I think his agents overshot with that 14 million
What a terrible trade for the sharks.
Kudos to Otts for a couple of trades, Staios thought he improved the team, Way to go. Here's my problem, its that lingering 1st round pick that has to be handed over – its either this year or next year. And now the handing over of 2nd round picks?? Slow your jets, because Perron and Giroux are 37 yrs of age.
Feel free to believe him or not, but Grier says it was the opportunity to acquire Ostapchuk that caused him to trade a player he was not looking to deal. I don't get it.
Sharks believe in their prospects and I don't think it's worth paying Zetterlund top line money to play on your 3rd line in 2-3 years
Chef staios out here cooking 🍳
Sharks fan checking in here, and there are VERY few palm trees….

This was a terrible trade for my sharks 😢
My only assumption is that they're banking on Bordeleau to be ready to play next season and can use the cap space / draft capital this off-season to bring in some people.
Everytime something like this trade goes down, I assume that they have talked with players People and they have told the team that he wont make a conttact and the player will go to Europe if they wont trade him or the team wanted to do right for the player.
Adam thought I missed pointing out how right he was about how boring this trade deadline was but I was just so overwhelmed with the amount of boring it took me a minute to get back to pointing out how right he was. Trade DULLine!
The GM of the sharks said he was going to use some of the picks acquired to make some trades and be very active in free agency , but im still super sad about this deal 😢 Fabian was William Eklunds best friend
both the cozens and the zetterlund are parts of the EK65 trade tree.. SS is just re-aquiring the better parts from the trade
The cozens for Norris trade was and is meh who knows. This Zetterlund trade is so sneaky goood and it makes Ottawa a way better and deeper team, Ottawas top 6 is super talented, and it drops Perron and Amadio back to the third line where they can hold their own.
Honestly a great trade for Ottawa. They were lacking another good, young winger in the top 6 and they got a guy who can give them good production on the second line and also be physical. The one takeaway I got from the trade deadline is that Ottawa is even heavier to play against. Stutzle, Tkachuk, Batherson, Zetterlund, Cozens are all big, and can hit and grind.
