The NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone, and Steve Yzerman’s moves (or mostly lack thereof) have Detroit Red Wings fans a bit confused…
Tune in as we open by covering the return of Petr Mrazek to Hockeytown, as he and Craig Smith come from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Joe Veleno – reactions, analysis, value, how this affects Sebastian Cossa. Cam Talbot, & Alex Lyon, & more. Next, a discussion on whether sitting tight and not adding more help for Dylan Larkin, Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat, & the rest of Todd McLellan’s squad, losing Christian Fischer to waivers, and Yzerman’s comments on the high prices in the crazy sellers’ market across the league.
After that, Steve Yzerman’s notes on wanting to be a bigger, tougher team, before covering big trades from across the league, including: Jake Walman and the sore spot for Red Wings fans, Dylan Cozens – Josh Norris, Mikko Rantanen – Logan Stankoven, Brock Nelson, Scott Laughton, Brad Marchand, & other deals in a crazy day outside of Detroit.
Finally, a somber note as Carter Mazur’s debut end horrifically for the Grand Rapids Griffins star before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment – enjoy this “emergency” episode!

We have a bunch of inflatable arm tubemen skating around in the LCA
Trading a 2nd round pick for Nyquist would have been stupid
Obviously Chicago being one of the worst teams in the league influences Mrazek's performance and save percentage. Lyon is atrocious, he is a big upgrade. Free agent goalie market this summer is also extremely weak. Cossa spends 1 more year in GR and is the goalie called up in case of injury, the next year Mrazek and Talbot contracts expire and it will be Cossa time.
Mazur has the fabri life 🤕
So we’re just gonna ignore that the bottom pair isn’t even NHL caliber? Yzerman says you need a 1st, 2nd, or a top prospect to improve, yet Henri Jokiharju—a legit NHL defenseman, even if he’s nothing special—was moved for a 4th. But sure, let’s pretend there were no options.
“He’d have to shoot to get a rebound” missed you Evan
Stevie didn’t like Maxs question at the post deadline interview..lol
Gilbert, not “Jill-bear”. He’s from Buffalo
The front office is loaded with uneducated clowns. Yzerman and his cronies are all relics of the past. Friends but not in any way qualified to make decisions for an NHL team. But this is not new news; it has been going on for the entire Yzerman tenure. Illich should clean the house and get some professionals in there.
Wish we just kept Joey v smh
Feels like Yzerman had another trade lined up bagged Mrazek then fumbled a Lyon for a middling D-man trade.
In the offseason Stevie needs to go give JJ Peterka an offer sheet he cant refuse , kid can score and he is young !!!!
I’d love Pettersson trade in the offseason boys, he is a guy who I think needs the season to end and he’ll come back to that 100pt guy. He didn’t have the best offseason last year, let’s give the dude the chance with a new scenery.
Thinking there might be benefit for trading for a guy earlier and be one of the teams setting the market value. Puts the team in the driver’s seat and can go to the edge of their comfort zone or just outside it on a trade. Takes away some of the other team’s ability to point to other deals as benchmarks (especially if there is a trend of overpays or crazy overpays). All in teams can overpay and don’t care because the window is now. A strategy adjustment in being more aggressive earlier for trade targets might be in order. Takes two parties to be like minded of course. Maybe trading Lyon a week or 10 days ago makes the Mrazek pick up more understandable. May have missed a chance to sell high on Kiiskinen this deadline after his recent play. Think they need to sell high on some prospects in these cases or draft some of the bigger “named” guys that have fallen in the second round as they may have more reputation value as throw ins as reclamation projects sometimes.
They simply wanted Veleno gone
Larkin will be in his 30s when Cossa finally becomes the starter.
The one trade I wished they made was Henri Jokiharju from Buffalo for a 4th round pick. 25 year old RFA, right shot defenseman, would have been an upgrade over Holl and Gustafsson.
The Wings are as pathetic as Buffalo…let that sink in
This podcast was as boring and lifeless as the TDL and game last night. I guess being critical of Yzerman destroys all that access to the team. Priorities 🤷♂️
Last five games five losses 😢
I’m tired, boss.
Went to a Griffs game, Cossa was awful.
God, I loved Brian Rafalski. Wish that he played in North America earlier, and spent his whole career as a Wing.
If Yzerman’s focus is the future, this trade threw that philosophy out the window. Are Mrázek or Smith in the Wings future?
Edmonton is my team in the west now. Just becouse of Walman. Always a DISSAPOINTED Red Wings fan though!!
Straight up pathetic,…
Im glad that they didnt give up their future to try to force the playoffs with this team, but its also too bad the management couldnt find even one life line for the guys that are here now. Maybe a change of scenary for Mrazek will bring his numbers up and will be a blessing in disguise? Maybe if they unload some more in the offseaseon they can get Marner and Ehlers.
My Veleno rookie card was already worth little, now it's worth $1…
you know the D is bad when we miss jeff petry
Ok I liked all the takes until you started praising Kyle Dumbass
I'd love it if Bertuzzi comes back..but he needs to stop off in NYR and MTL first so he plays for every original 6 team and comes back to win a Cup in Detroit
Theres a reason the red wings front office hasnt been raided for promotions across the league. Look at the lions, theyve lost several pieces because of how good their staff is. The red wings havent lost any. Certainly says something…
Welcome back Geriatric mediocrity … next Brad Park and Gordie will reappear in the winged wheel #Yzersuck
Quit babying Cossa … either he stops pucks or he can be traded for Marc Andre Fleury !!
Tell me how this team gets better next year
Edvinnson needs to lose the orange vest … he’s been a traffic cone!
Nice try guys, but Yzerman gets no credit for theoretical bad trades he did not make. Getting Mrazek and his bloated contract is crazy. I'm guessing the trade was made because both of our current goalies are now struggling. What are the odds that we sneak into the playoffs this year with another retreat goalie. Can't get excited about some 34 year old 3rd line center tossed in. The only way this trade made sense is Chicago picked up 50% of Mrazek's contract. The trade I would have liked could have been Veleno and a 3rd or 4th rounder to Chicago for Connor Murphy, a good right shooting defensman, but that would require a smarter Detroit GM. Sad part is Yzerman and his buddies are going no where
I saw Brad say “Brian got it right” wanted to thank you for the nod!!
My original comment was Stevie has a thing for geriatric goalies and forwards!!
TREPIDATION
Make your first prospect profile Malcolm Spence. I loved what I saw from him in the one game I saw him play in the Summer Showcase in Plymouth.
