NHL trade deadline: Red Wings add Petr Mrazek, Craig Smith for Joe Veleno; Yzerman press conference

Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman spoke with reporters about the NHL trade deadline on Friday, March 7, 2025. Yzerman and the Red Wings made two deadline deals, largely underwhelming Detroit fans as the Wings sit outside the playoffs as the deadline passed.

The Wings first acquired a conditional fourth-round draft pick for cap space in a three-team deal with the Seattle Kraken and Tampa Bay Lightning. In another deal, Yzerman sent Joe Veleno to the Chicago Blackhawks for center Craig Smith and goalie Petr Mrázek.

    Walman trade all over again, smh. Veleno might have a future, Mrázek and “What’s his 35 year old face” don’t.

    Blackhawks had a problem carrying three goalies. Thanks to Stevie Y they no longer have that problem. I’m a Hawks fan and have seen every game this season. Mrazek has been bad for months. He played really well last season so maybe he can get back to that form in Detroit.

    Really sad that an icon as a player is such a bust as a GM these moves are indefensible mzarek is a bad goalie period and a duo of Talbot and mzarek is old and inept
    What about cossa or is he ever going to get a chance to start

    I like that Pete is back, but I don't know if this is the best move. I don't think Steve has what it takes to get this team back to winning. This team is declining and with talent. I hope the Ilitch's consider look for a new GM.
