They’re suddenly BUYERS

Darren Dreger weighed in on potential Montreal Canadiens trades leading up to the deadline during his segment on Team 690. Despite Jake Evans recently signing a four-year extension, Dreger noted that the team could still move a player or two before the deadline.

Evans’ new deal, worth $2.85 million per year, underscores both his desire to stay in Montreal and the growing appeal of the Canadiens under Kent Hughes’ leadership. The front office has shifted the perception of Montreal as a destination, making it a more attractive spot for players around the league.

While still in the midst of a rebuild, the Canadiens have shown promising stretches this season, suggesting they’re close to taking the next step. Currently, they sit just one point outside the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. However, given the league’s parity, they’re also still in the Draft Lottery mix.

This leaves Hughes and his staff in a tricky position. They must balance maximizing asset value with maintaining the momentum the team has built. Even a narrow playoff berth holds value, providing crucial experience and setting the stage for future success.

They can make moves – it’s VERY EASILY DONE. 💯

But will Hughes find the 🪡 to thread? 🤔 He’s very particular.

What do you guys and girls think? 👀👇

    🥃 Whiskey

  2. No need to force a deal oflr something if there is not someone fitting the need. Personally I don't think MTL needs a trade this year, since the objective was not the playoff but to fight for it. If they make playoff it is "over achieving" the initial objective. If by any chance we end up in playoff I would go with the people we have and give a max of experience to those guys.

  3. nice viddy whiskey pumped for TN vs oilers lfg no ones talking devo trades so are we keeping him ? he's grown on me last few games lol

  4. Another great video, Love Evan's for staying. This is where he is appreciated the most, going to another team, he might just dissapear for good, which I would not like to see.

  5. They need a 2C with Dach going down if they plan to compete for the playoffs. Preferably a proven one that is a PPGish. I wouldn’t mind seeing a massive trade like our 2 1st rounders for Crosby.

  6. I love Evans even more. I’ve always kept an eye on him since was called up from Laval. He was sent back down to Laval a few times in the early days but he kept persisting and he’s one of the most versatile players on the team. Maybe a bit like Guy Carbonneau or maybe also a bit like Bob Gainey. I think I’d consider buying an Evans jersey when I next see a Habs game.

  7. I think it is difficult to pull off the type of trade Montreal wants at the trade deadline. Hughes is most likely using the trade deadline activity to gauge what teams are willing to trade with an eye to the offseason.
Also next year we will be looking to win in the playoffs. Assets for the 2026 deadline will be important.

  8. The deal is insulting. He's important to the team, but they wouldn't budge from $2.85mil? They couldn't even make it $3mil?

  9. Oh man the Habs future looks so promising, Reinbacher is really proving himself with the Rocket, if KH keeps doing his magic we are set for some really good things!

And this draft or the next we might have 2 first round picks…

  10. The biggest win of all in this is that players are buying SO MUCH into what MSL and HuGo are selling them that they are all in, committed 100% to the team ! And that's awesome to see and will resonate everywhere in the league ! Rebuild is done right

  11. I was pro-trade, but at that price, I'm happy. He'll be a good role player when our playoff window opens.

  12. With this, it's decision time for the center position for multiple young centers.

With Suzuki on 1st, evans on 4th. You need a 2nd line center if you put Newhook on 3rd.

For the 3rd and 4th line though you have Mesar, Xekhaj, Kapanen, Beck, Davidson. Hage has a potential for 2nd line.

I consider Dach's latest injury to be the end for him.

I know Beck and Xekhaj can play wing as well.

That means among Newhook, Mesar, Davidson and Kapanen, 2 or 3 need to go.

  13. I think this is a great deal! I'm very glad to have Evans stay on the team and he's right, money isn't everything. Being on a team with guys you want to pay with, respect from the organization, a coach you want to play for, these are intangibles that's hard to put a dollar value on. He, along with Armia and Anderson, is a huge reason why the Habs currently have the 5th best PK in the league at 82.3%.

  14. You from Mtl and said Des''Char''nais? c'mon man… We had a Desharnais with us for so long.. 🙁

  15. Based on the current political context, I'mn wondering how much money some players are willing to leave on the table NOT to go to the US for the next 4 years.

  16. A shame the next game isn't in mtl I'm sure the fans would've let him hear how happy everyone is about this deal

  17. Hughes signed him for 4 yrs. BUT ….the truth is …he only wants him for the next two (2) Years …!! After thet …He is trade bait …Evans replacement with …by then be in place …Younger …more skilled …better Hockey I.Q. …tougher …stronger …etc. ….!!
