Magic Johnson Loved Playing Against Dr J in the Finals ๐คพ๐ฟ | @AllTheSmokeProductions #shorts
Magic Johnson joins the All The Smoke crew and talks about what it was like for him to play against his childhood idol, Julius Erving aka Dr. J, as a rookie in the 1980 NBA Finals. Magic was starstruck taking the court with Dr. J and he can vividly, as only Magic can demonstrate, still recall what was going through his mind when he was witness to two of the most iconic plays in NBA history: when Dr J cradled it for a huge breakway dunk on teammate Michael Cooper and when Dr J did a reverse layup on the baseline but turned into Luke Skywalker in the air. Much love to Magic for telling this story, Dr. J for paving the way for the NBA we know today and Matt Barnes & Stephen Jackson for always crushing it on their podcast and not only having the best guests but also being great interviewers that allow for these stories to be told!

The way players view Kobe now is how players viewed Dr J back then.

I don't think often how privileged I was to see Dr. J play at the old Spectrum against the Bird Celtics, but those were the days.
Dr .J is really the greatest player ever but Mike and Kobe were just him times two
When you watched Dr J and George Gervin play each other, you swore there was no gravity on the court for those two. It was unreal.
Dr J, a true basketball star!!
Dr j was a god โค he set the stage for what followed and the clowns we have today have destroyed everything ๐ข the USA is goi g to start loosing a lot of matches internationally
epic
Coop made a bad business decision is crazy ๐คฃ
Thatโs insane. Just hearing his stories. Him playing against and with the greats the legends. Think about thisโฆ. At one time in the NBA there was Kareem, Magic, Worthy, Isaiah, Dr.J, Larry, Moses Malone, Barkley, Hakeem, Barkley, Drexler, Gervin, MJ, Theus, Ewing, Mutombo, Lambeer, Dumars, Stockton, Malone, and so many more all playing on the courts every night at the same time. Regardless of where they were in their careers. Iโm telling you that was the golden age of basketball for real! NO ONE took days off. It was kill or be killed.
It reminds me of what KG and Rasheed said in some of their interviews or shows. The locker rooms were too grown and it was grown ass men with kids at home playing.
In the ABA as well!!!
Dr. J was the best, but I hear he was not a nice man in business
was magic good player too ?
We went from players elevating the game into an art form with each successive generation (peaked with MJ) now we have a punch of dudes shooting 15 3s a game.
Glad to hear Doc is beign acknowledged โค
Dr J use to always make everybody's Top 10 lists along with Moses Malone. Some of the greats aren't talked about or respected enough.
Dr. J was before my time, but this is one of my favorite dunks of all time

Who is this man? Iโd like to hear more! He sounds like heโs got a lot of fun and interesting stories.
This is why I believe you should always treat everyone with respect. I once was in a round robin job interview for an executive position at this company. It was highly competitive and I knew some of the people I was interviewing against. I got the job and I was curious at what made me stand out. The director said everyoneโs going to be nice to him but he likes to ask his staff how they were treated. He said the janitor, his assistant, and the secretary spoke very highly of me. I didnโt do anything extraordinary I was just nice, polite, and respectful. ๐
Thanks magic for the facts .I never forgot I watched you guys sweep the Doc ,then I watched the Doc sweep you guys the next year memories ๐โค

Man, Dr J, Larry, Magic, Dominique, Kareem, Bad Boy Pistons, Jordan… Can you imagine having to play against that level of talent to win it all… I don't think we have seen anything like that in any pro sports since.
