  1. I don't necessarily agree or disagree that a losing season is a bad thing. I don't think this is a staff comfortable with complacency… I hope.

I remain optimistic but even a top 5 pick this year (and potentially a Rangers 15th or so), plus the draft capital, cap space, and pieces they CAN move… This screams retool rather than full blown San Jose level rebuild.

I'm trying here, but as a traumatized Pirate's fan, and an exhausted Steeler's fan, I understand the sentiment. I do truly think with 87 & 71 there's a legit shot at some sort of "Last Dance". Stranger things have happened.

  2. I don't want them to lose every game because picking 5th or 6th means nothing. What I do want are the young players from the AHL to play. If they are not ready yet, at least we will know what we need for next year.

  3. Great take DK. While we're at it, let's still address the Karlsson in the room in J1Q. He's friggin' terrible. Is he playing that way on purpose? /s On that Knies goal, one of the worst Karlsson blunders you will ever see. Many of his decisions this season have been cringe-worthy. And how many have led to a goal by the other team?😬

  4. From what im hearing from multiple sources, if your pick isnt 1-4 you shouldn't even bother with fighting for a higher one. Even so. Probably 3 of those top picks arent sure things.

  5. It definitely is just one of those types of seasons it just seems like nothing is going right and everything possible is going wrong. I really didn’t think things would get this bad tho. Worst season by far since 2005-2006, Sid’s rookie year!

  6. I am NOT a leafs fan. Way too much coverage of them up here but I disagree on Marner slightly… He was good last playoffs… And was very good at 4 Nations.

  7. physically hard (w/the extended EFFF sound to start)… thought u were going for a different word that starts with the EFFFF sound.

  8. blomquist is not ready for prime time , that was terrible ! when an NHL team scores 5 goals they almost always win but not with that crapola goal tending ! not even the great Montreal teams of the past could win with karlson and letangs nightly gaffes!

  9. Only thing I hate is the last loser point. We are lining up a potential top lottery pic. Don't blow it. DK I want losses. The goalies are soft yes but the entire team stinks. We need a reboot. This season is toast. Get best pic. It's in no way just goalies.

  10. Grow up. We have nothing to lose. We need to see what Sergei Murashov, and Filip Larsson have to offer. Ned ain't it. BLOMQVIST IS PATHETIC. That kid is terrified to play NHL hockey, which is an enormous red flag. You know who's a gamer? All heart, 100% grit? MURASHOV. Fleury came into the league at the same age. This anti-AHL/ECHL mindset of both the organization, and the Pittsburgh media is beyond toxic.

  11. EK65 has to go. He can't sweep a puck if it bit him. He's just not fitting on this team.
And why is Imama scratched when he actually plays defense?

  12. I dont know much about Toronto, but can say that the Pens have an all around horrible Defense..that includes EVERYONE. I dont think any goalie (no matter how good he is) would have a good result on this team.

  13. It's gonna be weird rooting for a Pens team in a few years that has nobody left from the core. Since I started following hockey it was Mario and Jags, then a few terrible years and we got the core that yielded 3 more Cups. Aside from the bleak years from the late 90s till about 2006, we've been SPOILED with star players. That included goalies Barasso, Wregget, Mooooose Hedberg, Patrick Lalime, Flower, and Murray. If we're gonna be without the firepower of Sid and Geno in a couple years, it'd be nice to have a Carey Price type of goalie talent and that seems nearly impossible to obtain at the moment.

  14. Outside of goaltending, this is a very flawed team that, at least to me, would need someone like Shersterkin to help them win. There are moments the Pens wake up, flex and we think a corner has been turned, only to realize it's a momentary flex. While I understand your feelings about winning as many games as possible, to me it's just not happening. We can't ignore realities, but we can embrace them and by that I don't mean getting used to losing. This team is a sinking ship THIS season. So to me, this is the perfect time to let Blomqvist get as many NHL games as possible. If we need to wait for the full rebuild to let players develop then we'll never have any young talent to help this team before Sid hangs them up. So again, to me, this is PRIME opportunity to let not just Blomqvist, but a few of the young players get some regular NHL playing time even if they ultimately go back to WBS next season.

I believe a flaw of this team the last four or five years has not making any room for young players unless they have an immediate impact and it's unrealistic to expect young players to just burst on to the scene and maintain a productive level. You look at teams like Washington and Los Angeles who were in similar positions to the Pens, but focused on getting young players up and giving them time to find their groove. What better time than these last 20 games when we know where this is going?

  15. The one thing about Blomqvist being bad is the fire hose is being completely pointed away from just how awful this team is defensively as well. I mean they gave up 6 breakaways … including a 2-on-0 … yesterday, and nobody is talking about that. If this team had a goaltender like … say Igor Shesterkin … they would be where the Rangers are and drafting 10-14th instead of 5th or 6th. Still missing the playoffs, just not missing the playoffs as badly. So yeah, goaltending would improve things, but they would still be an awful team. Their defensive analytics (so not including goaltending) are right there with the worst of the worst … the Rangers, Sharks, Blackhawks and Ducks. This is a bad hockey team. Yes, the goaltending is bad. And yes, a miracle needs to happen to fix that. But they need to fix this atrocious blueline as well, and that seems to be ignored (at least from the outside noise).

  16. Karlsson clearly has skill, but his heart is not in playing for a losing team. He's been on a losing team longer than the Penguins gave been one. I'm sure if a competitor takes a chance on him based on his 4 Nations performance, he will play better. He's not a $ 10 million player, but he's still offensively talented when motivated.

  17. More and more it looks like all of Dubas' moves turn to NOT Gold….some of this is not on Dubas, but I mean I haven't thought he has 'won' any of his moves so far….and I mentioned this yesterday…..this team built a culture of winning that contributed to winning games they shouldn't have won….and they are now building a culture of losing that IS having them lose games they shouldn't.

  18. Karlsson legitimately looks like a saboteur out there. Painful to watch this guy out on the ice a majority of the time, I'm sorry I just have to air that grievance.

  19. DK, how good is our goaltender coaching? Also, I'm wondering if the festering is because we are too predictable for the competition. There is something to say about being a new team every year with the same old players.
