In a thrilling matchup on January 2, 2025, the Colorado Avalanche overcame a three-goal deficit to edge the Buffalo Sabres 6-5 in overtime. The game was marked by a significant incident in the third period when Avalanche goalie Scott Wedgewood sustained a right leg injury after a collision involving Sabres forward Zach Benson. Controversially, play continued without a whistle, leading to a Buffalo goal that extended their lead to 4-2. Despite this setback, Colorado rallied, with Devon Toews scoring the overtime winner just 48 seconds into the extra period.

Great game, just as good as our last comeback against Buffalo earlier in the season..
hate to say it but this is the right call reason is that col never had possession of the puck and ref cant just take the scoring chance away from buff if they did fake injuries would start becoming a thing to stop scoreing chances it sucks watching but it is the right call
Ref suck but I think the goalie, while probably hurt, did try to sell the call. Guy had hardly touched him yet and he dropped like a boy getting caught by his mom.
Ref was right. Too many players for some reason like to put guys into their own goalie. I never understood that. The avs wanted the play stopped because they were on their heels in tbei end
I was at the game with my family, and everyone was pissed and angry at the refs. It was like watching a Cheifs game on ice. Refs don't care. So us winning was sweet revenge
Refs just seem to be hot trash this year
Bad reffing in hockey should be an easy fix, but you can't coerce games that way so they don't.
Did anyone watch Jared Bednars reaction after this game..He was on FIRE!
Read the rule book. The ref made a technically correct call. Facepalm. Blame the rule makers if you're all pouty-faced.
Thank you for showing Bednar's postgame presser. I got sick of people saying he was (insert nasty names here) for challinging for goaltender interference, and that was proof he already knew that when he did it. He said he wanted them to look at it again.
I subscribed just because you showed what us Avs fans were trying to tell them in the comments. The words came out of his own mouth, he knew, it was just the statement he was making.
Ironically, we got called twice in the very next game for basically the same thing. I'm not sure yet if the refs were trying to say "F you", or if they got a meeting about how to call it properly. I am going to be watching to see which way it goes. Or…it could be just more consistent inconsistency from the refs too. 🤷🏼♂️
Just a clarification. Empty net goals are goals scored on an empty net. These would be goals scored with the goalie pulled for an extra attacker.
Nice Job — Good Breakdown — subscribed!!
are you talking through a paper towel tube?
That is one of the all time non calls that I can remember in the NHL. Absolutely no excuse. Go Avalanche
Wasnt GI, Avs never touched the puck, and it was a leg injury. Get mad at the rules.
My right ear feels left out of this video.
“Should refs be able to make exceptions to the reviews on a challenge”
No. You tell the referees what you’re challenging. They challenged for GI, it wasn’t GI. You even said it yourself. There’s no way to challenge for a missed stoppage, it’s not a mechanism of the game. And rightfully so. The referees called it by the book, what is there to even challenge?
The part I hate the most is that Benson celebrated the goal… it was basically an empty net bro
If the ref isn't going to make the call, why are they there? They're literally just extra meat on the ice if they don't do the thing they're there to do.
Nice video. Who's your favorite NHL team, btw?
I was at this game and I don't think I've ever celebrated a regular season win against bad team more in my life
Hockey has to be a violent game with animosity for it to really work – be compelling and engaging. It's too much soccer-on-ice today, with players only trying to stick check.
There was nothing to review. Whether or not play should continue is based on a judgement call by the ref on the severity of the injury. Play is not automatically blown dead if the goalie is injured and the opposing team has the puck. Wedgewood had an ankle sprain and was back in action in about a week. I would say based on the rules, not blowing the whistle and delaying medical treatment did not cause him unnecessary harm and that the injury was not exceptionally severe. It was the right call.
Love the Avs still.
Check the refs bank balance, he is obviously ofn the take!
Just look at the first goal, the player was in the blue and stopped the goalie from getting across. Corrupt ref should be removed from the job!
Play should have been stopped. Now the referees are hurt by the coaches comments and are blowing penalties on the Avs. They screwed up and are still penalizing the Avs.
Was definitely the most entertaining game so far this season!
Good first 👍
Do run the audio through headphones though and give a listen, I am catching an odd oscillating effect that cleared up when the post game interview was run and then came back after.
Subscriber 373 checking in, good vid. Sound got fixed in subsequent vids
ALL OFFICIALS IN EVERY SPORT ARE ON THE TAKE!!!!
The Avs , Edmonton, and Vegas are in a league of their own.
ist goal, player in the crease- should have been no goal. The play should have been called dead – goalie hurt, no one in control of puck. This is not exception to the rule. NHL refs are illiterate, incompetent and neglectful morons.
I'm shocked…….SHOCKED I tell you that the officiating in the NHL SUCKS.
Not bad for a first video, stick with this formula
The injured player’s team must have “possession and control “ of the puck before the referee can stop play. It is not “touching the puck” as the coach said, and even if that rule is sometimes fudged a bit, the ref should not deny a team a scoring opportunity, as was the case here. Yes, the goalie is down and out, but does he require immediate assistance? Nope, he’s going to survive, even if it hurts. This rule exists because goalies, being intelligent and crafty athletes, may decide to ‘improvise’ an injury in a desperate situation, hoping for a quick whistle.
I'm a seventy year old Canadian and have never, never, ever seen a referee make a wrong call…I mean I have never, never, ever whined about it!!!
Both the players and refs are responsible for the play on the ice. They are totally inconsistent in their willingness to play and call the game according to the rules. Every single game there are multiple penalties that could have been avoided and the difference between regular season and playoff officiating is a real eyesore for the league. Why the constant fights. Fighting is against the rules.
I kinda agree with the refs on this one because there is no rule that doesn't make the goalie go off the ice for being injured if whistled to be blown dead. If the NHL had this rule then yes they should have blown it dead, they don't, so their iwn team caused the injury so why penalize the other team for something the other team did. Not like they can get a 5 on 4 for this as it was their own teammate that caused the injury.
Loved the video. Unfortunately, I think this will be copyrighted shortly. The NHL is the only league actively going through "found video" of their league and copyrighting them. Just a heads up! 😉
The Play is not dead until the Avs's touch the puck
It was a great game to watch, but thats most Avs games 🤣
Like, it's not just Wedgewood. It's the late hit on the Avs goal right before, and a lot of other little moments. It feels like, for a while now, the league has been more hostile to the Avs on the whole. Which, that could be because of Altitude Sports and Entertainment, it could be that Kroenke pisses off Bettman, it could be that they don't like the small media market being good. Who knows. But the refs don't seem as on the ball for the Avs as they are in other teams' games.
The ref definitely noticed the goalie down but new he was full of shit. Pretending to be hurt🤦♂️
audio only on one side
oh man the audio narration is dismal. voice is panned to the left mostly but goes back and forth to the right . mic should be mono.
Your first video and your last for me! You and Bernard are completely wrong! If the refs blew the whistle everytime a player went with an injury players would be faking injuries all the time! The whistle is blown if a player is bleeding and obviously in trouble or if his team has control of the puck! Know the rules, you’re dumb and obviously a disgruntled, typical Avs fan! See ya…
Great first vid I’ll be here next time ❤
i wish i could watch this video but the sound is just insanely annoying, how do you achieve half surround sound??
Great video!
Keep the AVS content rolling this game was a monster of a barn burner
