On this week’s edition of the Hockey Show, Ty Anderson reacts to Alex Ovechkin getting to within 12 goals of Wayne Gretzky’s record. This then leads Ty to ask whether or not Ovechkin will go do down as the most offensively skilled NHL player of all time.

Yes. Gretzky is a has been . Ovechkin is the GOAT
Id put Gretzky, Mario Lemieux & Connor McDavid ahead of Ovi, and Ovi is great. I think McDavid, as far as pure physical talent, is the best player ever. Not saying hes the best ever (best talent doesnt mean best ever, Tom Brady is case in point) or will have the most points ever (no one will touch Gretzky's overall point total) but is most talented. McDavid is so much better than the 2nd bets player in the world now (i think is Nathan MacKinnon)
It's all opinion, so here goes: Ovechkin is not the most offensively skilled player in the NHL's history. Not trying to be a contrarian, but that's the question being asked, but he is the most gifted goal scorer, so I'll give you both of my lists to be complete:
1> Offensively Skilled (top three in order): Gretzky, Lemieux, Marcel Dionne
2> Most Skilled Goalscorers: Ovi, Kurri, Bossy
Went Dionne because you do have to put these achievements and stats into context, IMHO. And Dionne played on some terrible teams. As far as goalscorers go, this is a sniper category, and those three were absolute machines. Wanted to put in Jagr, but Kurri can't be denied.
Once Ovie breaks the record, every goal he scores sets a new record. Which is kinda cool.
He is definitely not the most offensively skilled player. His shot is ridiculous but he’s a hanger, waiting for the puck in the neutral zone not playing D, but he’s definitely an all time player. Lemieux is prob the most offensively skilled I’ve ever seen
Matthews will break ovechkins goal record
No. Not even close. Gretzky has more assists than any other player in history has points.
No. Best pure goalscorer, not the best offensive player. He's too easily removed from games. If you key on him and take away (or at least limit, you aren't going to stop him completely) his ability to score goals he's next to useless offensively. His passing is mediocre and his stick handling is average at best. That's part of the reason why he hasn't had as much playoff success as a player of his talent should…too one dimensional.
And no defense…"controller disconnected" bad. That's a different topic though.
54 goals in his last 80 games at the age of 38-39
