Recap: San Diego Gulls vs Coachella Valley Firebirds, 2.28

The San Diego Gulls put up a valiant fight but fell just short in a high-scoring 6-5 loss to the Coachella Valley Firebirds on Friday night at Pechanga Arena. The Gulls came out strong in the first period, taking a 3-2 lead with goals from Jan Myšák, Ryan Carpenter, and Sasha Pastujov. However, special teams proved to be the difference, as Coachella Valley struck for three consecutive power-play goals in the second period to take control of the game. Daniel Sprong, John Hayden, and Logan Morrison each found the back of the net on the man advantage to give the Firebirds a 5-3 lead heading into the final frame. Jani Nyman added his second goal of the night early in the third to extend the Firebirds’ lead to 6-3, but the Gulls fought back late with two goals from Nikita Nesterenko to close the gap. Despite outshooting Coachella Valley 29-25, San Diego was unable to find the equalizer in the closing moments. The Gulls will look to bounce back as they continue their homestand.
