  1. Differences:

    1. The overall style is much more assertive and aggressive under McClellan where Lalonde was a complete dump and Chase and try not to lose

    2. McClellan has inspired much more confidence in guys like Berggren, Kaspar, and Johansson

    3. Guys like Kane, Compher and Copp had basically totally disengaged under Lalonde

  2. They need a player that can drop the gloves. It’s hard to watch the wings when Larkin gets slapped around by Middleton and nobody does a dam thing. I can’t watch hockey like that.

The team captain gets slapped around and not one wings challenged Middleton and you have a guy on the team 6 foot 8 and he don’t do anything wtf. Thats not hockey that’s soccer.

  3. Biggest thing I noticed is the offense is not locked up in some kind of structure.
They’re free to be offensive yet they’re still largely defensively responsible.

  4. I think its as simple as what mclellen said in his first presser, there's a lot of familiar faces in the wings staff, those faces are the same ones he won a cup with, a lot of them are players he coached, which means he has a better working relationship with them than lalonde who came in trying to reinvent the wheel and who a lot of the players and staff probably disliked because he was a coach for a team that had been ragdolling them in the regular season and playoffs the prior 10 years, which would explain why none of their prospects got a chance under lalonde and why those same prospects have been an integral part of their success under mclellen. Also yzerman is notorious for having a huge ego, you win 3 cups that happens, none of his coaches were going to come in and make a push because once again you can't impose a rivals strategy on a team that doesn't have the talent and on a staff who frickin hates that system because they ragdolled you for 10 years. It's not complicated, but no one is bringing this up, yzerman to his credit went with a coach the franchise was familiar with, that coach had a better relationship with the existing staff/ex players, they gave indication of the strengths and weaknesses of their prospects and voila you have a team that is more than just larkin raymond seider and debrincat which gives you an opportunity to compete for a playoff spot.

  5. Serious question but why aren't the Wings considered contenders for a deep run, possibly a Finals run? They are a top 3 team after Winnipeg since Christmas. They're hot at the right time and even after a 2 weeks break they came back and got 5/6 points. This team is completely different and it's not a blip an accident after like 25 games.

  6. A key issue going forward is at center. Not a fan of Copp but he's done for the season there needs to be more than a temporary patchwork line shuffle

  7. I think the biggest thing is Todd extends trust to his guys, hes been around long enough to know how.

The Aljo situation is proof Lalonde didnt trust his team

  8. Definitely need to invest in one or two players regardless. Wings are 32 in the league for the penalty kill. This may cost them the ability (especially potential new injuries) post trade deadline to make the playoffs. It’s time to make a splash…..

  9. To the idea of what’s different with the Toddfather compared to Lalonde. I felt during the end of the Lalonde era, that 80% of the roster was playing in the lower percentages of their ability. Every guy has the ceiling of what they can bring as a player, and they also have a floor. During Lalonde a lot of these guys were playing towards their floor, and now almost everyone is playing up towards their ceilings.

  10. I think Lalonde had a system in mind but didn't have the personnel to make that system work. It was far more defensively-minded with personnel who don't really fit that mold. McLellan, I think, has an offensively-minded system, and it's unlocked Kane, Cat, and even Kasper with a spot on the top line. I believe Kane has more goals and more points since the coaching change than he did before it. It's been incredible to watch… but even if we miss the playoffs, I don't care because I didn't expect it to begin with.

  11. If you could pick and add to this team , one player from any of the modern day Red Wing Cup Teams….. who would you pick. I pick Lidstrom.

  12. Soderblom is tough to play against and that's always valuable. I've been impressed by his defensive work with his stick. His reach is so huge that it frequently disrupts passing lanes and breakout angles. Every game there are a few plays that stick out that his reach causes issues with opposing players.

  13. Why do so many of you nerds say “we” like you are part of the team? I don’t think people sitting on the couch count as professional athletes. It’s so cringe. It screams insecure and that you’re lacking in life so you have to come up with a fantasy that you are part of something bigger than a 9-5 desk job. Spoiler alert: you’re not.

  14. Its nice to see so many upgrades coming from the inside. Toddfather has seemingly single-handedly moved our prospect development timeline a year or so forward from where it appeared to be under Lalonde. Just by looking for untapped potential rather than being overly systematic.
