The bottom line is that this team needs a top line center. You are very unlikely to get one in the middle of the first round of the draft. You won't get one through free agency and almost certainly won't trade for one. If we are going down this path, then we should likely lower our expectations. This team will likely be good and fun at some point, but probably does not project to be a Stanley cup contender at any point.
Love you guys, love watching STG, but I don’t know if we’re watching the same team or what? I mean, they just plain aren’t that good. They’re nowhere close to cup contention. Risto is clearly someone who should be moved – especially on a team who really wants to build a contending team in the future. They should be rebuilding like New Jersey did. I will say, there has really been a tone shift in the episodes this year I feel like. We all know that we’re not close to a cup, right? Like we’re close to having a GAMBLE at a cup as one of the last teams in. That isn’t the goal here! And it shouldn’t be! This was a Chuck Fletcher-esque press conference and I almost cannot believe you guys are falling for it again. I know the argument is that Danny isn’t trying to compete – but the problem is that he’s not doing anything at all. Keeping Risto is the equivalent of doing whatever it takes to keep the team competitive.
You said the quiet part out loud, referencing Cates' play surpassing Laughon's. Their most immediate need in the draft is a galvanized 1C and they need to clear a space on the roster for their young players to develop at the pro level.
Not sure if Russ has eaten too many cheesesteaks, or turning into a long hair hippy
Danny better be making some moves. I’m tired of watching this team fall out of the top 10 pick and then wonder why we suck every season.
A rebuild doesn’t always mean “fire sale” or “trade everyone”.
Tanking doesn’t work, it’s all about how/who you draft and how you develop. Much better rebuild strategy than SJ, Ana, and Chi.
People need to realize that this team is closer than they think, even Bundy said it a week ago.
I believe Risto is a better trade option in the offseason.
Side note – that Tony Louie and Joe Pippell in the live chat are absolute blockheads lol
if you think that Briere is doing even remotely the same thing as Chuck fletcher, youre an impatient child. russ needs to shut up, most of what he has said in this is just a bad take. we are only a 1&1/2 years into this. calm your tits
Risto needs to go at the deadline or before, no questions asked.
You do not take a historically chronically injured, underperforming, overpaid player who is for the first time in his 10+ year career is healthy and playing up to his contract and make a bet that all three of those factors will continue to work well.
Add in that they have young defensemen in the system that are NHL-ready and that that player is 30 years old and only under contract for 2 years where you won’t be a true cup contender, and it’s a no brainer.
Frost and Laughton I could take or leave. if they don’t get the right offer for those guys I’d be okay to at least wait to the offseason or till next year. Laughton brings some intangibles and is cheap enough, and Frost is young enough that he’s not on the edge of a performance cliff. Neither have the injury history of Risto where I worry as much that waiting another season could totally tank their value.
