History Made: Alex Nedeljkovic’s Groundbreaking Goalie Goal Explained

In an extraordinary display of skill and athleticism, Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic made history last night by scoring a goalie goal against the Buffalo Sabres. This remarkable achievement not only marks him as the first goalie in NHL history to record 1 goal and 1 assist in a single game, but it also highlights his unique status as the only goaltender to score at the NHL, AHL, and ECHL levels.

Nedeljkovic’s goal, recorded from a distance of 184 feet, stands as the second longest goalie goal in NHL history, just shy of Pekka Rinne’s record of 185 feet. Joining an elite group of only three others who have scored goalie goals in the AHL—Tristan Jarry and Chris Mason—Nedeljkovic’s accomplishment cements his place in hockey history.

  1. I think it's because goalies train to handle the puck more than before; plus they train to corral the puck on dump-ins so there are more opportunities if the offense isn't on them right away. Also the inverted bottom glove hand technique gives you a really strong shot.
