Even if this team makes the playoffs, we risk a revenge sweep from a team like the Capitals.
You only have to watch Team USA to see what the Rangers have NOT been doing: Backchecking, hard hitting on defense, real fights instead of useless doggie paddling scrums, shooting instead of endless passing.
Want making the playoffs to mean anything? Trade Laffy, one of the underachievers, for a large gritty defenseman. Call up a couple guys from the AHL. Sit those who give a half effort.
Trading Lafreniere makes no sense at all. In the early going he was great. Then the whole team went into the toilet & Laf went with them. Trochek & Panarin haven't been sterling either & then there is Laviolette playing blender lines to keep his job. I feel bad for Borgen who has to play with a guy who has no clue about positioning in the D-zone. For the Rangers to make the playoffs the D will have to play way better & Shesterkin will have to stand on his head. The Pack were really shorthanded in their game yesterday because Othmann, Berard, Leshysin & Robertson were called up to practice with the Rangers.
The only way it would make sense to trade Lafreniere is if Brady Tkachuk is in the return package. The Rangers have 7 games left before the trade deadline and they have four pending UFAs .. Lindgren, Vesey, Smith and Quick. Quick isn’t going anywhere. As for the other three , I really don’t expect much in return for them. On most playoff teams they would be depth acquisitions. Drury has his work cut out for him. He shouldn’t have to give up more picks or prospects for what looks like a borderline playoff team with really no expectations of a deep run if they manage to get in. I hope they don’t trade for any rentals…… like Frederic.
