A few days after the tragedy that took the lives of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, emotions are still raw, and they’ll likely stay that way for quite a while.

Not only are we awaiting updates on the legal procedures involving the alleged drunk driver who hit the Gaudreau brothers, but the 2024-25 NHL season is also set to start soon, which will be hard for every fan as they watch the Columbus Blue Jackets play without Johnny Hockey.

Throughout the next season, Gaudreau will likely remain among the hot topics, especially now that David Alter has started an interesting debate about the player’s legacy in the NHL.

Indeed, on X, David Alter shared a post in which he states his idea to rename the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy after Gaudreau.

This award is given to the ‘player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.’

Gaudreau won that trophy back in 2017, and it’s the only individual award he won in his career.

Back in 2017, Gaudreau was 23 and won the Lady Byng Memorial after receiving only two minor penalties in 72 games with the Calgary Flames. He also led his team in points, with 61, including 18 goals.

  1. No. He won it one time. Johnny Gaudreau was a really good player. But he has never been Crosby, or Bossy, or Lafleur, or Dionne. He died tragically. It is horrible, but people shouldn't lose their perspective. He was a B+ player, not an A or A+ player.

  2. The Jackets also lost one of their goalies in July 2021. Matiess Kivlenieks was killed while protecting a fellow players' wife and unborn child from an errant firework.

  3. I'm for either renaming the trophy or creating a new one. I don't believe it's too extreme for Columbus to retire 13. He chose them, and his untimely death will cast a shadow over that team for decades. I don't think the team would want to give out #13 anytime soon anyway

  4. You would have my vote. I have no idea who the Lady Byng is as well so the trophy didn't mean much. The Gaudreau trophy would be more meaningful because everyone knows the quality of the kind of person Johnny Hockey was.

  5. Instead of selling beer opening night they should sell purple Gatorade and donate the profits to people affected by drunk driving.

  6. At first I was in favor of renaming the award. But now that I know that Lady Bing is literally the one who donated the trophy in the first place and not just a random chatelaine, it doesn't make much sense to change its name

  7. 0 reason to rename established trophies, and a complete disservice to Lady Byng herself

  8. Give it time: grief leads to poor decisions.

And the trophy wasn’t randomly named after Lady Byng. The award was her idea, and she donated the trophy.

  9. It's sad but he is not the only star to have died tragic so big nooooooooooo to renaming it

  10. HELL NO! I hate that Gaudreau's life was senselessly ended by a drunk A-hole, but he was a highly overrated player that was already in serious decline even at just 31 years of age. Leave Lady Bing alone! She doesn't deserve to be erased from history because of some drunk driver, and Gaudreau simply wasn't good enough to warrant a major award being named after him. A local hockey rink in his home town, and maybe another in Calgary? Sure. Those would be more appropriate tributes. Even a team honour of some kind in either or both cities would be ok, but not a major NHL award that's already in remembrance of somebody else. You people that want to erase others from history are pure idiots!

  11. O.K. man …. Just breath & relax … There's no need right now to change or make up new trophys !! Let the healing stage continue & give the Gaudreau Family there privacy. I'm sure some kind of Large Remembrance / Admiration token of respect for Johnny will be addressed by the NHl in the near future !!!!!!

  12. The Lady Byng has a history of over 100 years of history it shouldnt be changed, a new award for the Gaudreau brotherswould be fitting

  13. The Gaudreaus were good people but don't rename it. Don't let the progressives eliminate tradition and create their new symbols. Lady Byng originally donated the trophy. The NHL is now an American league and has less respect for history. Conn Smythe, Maurice Richard, Calder, Stanley may be next to go. We don't want a Gary Bettman Cup.
