Laurence Gilman: Is Carson Soucy next to go? How LG would to try get Pettersson going again.

Laurence Gilman stops by and says the Canucks made out well with the trades, both in hockey and salary-cap senses. He evaluates Carson Soucy’s standing with the organization and his value on the trade market. And he explains what he’d do to get Pettersson going.

  1. It’s redundant to say at this point, but if EP40 turns it around this is a contending team. I got faith he can do it.

  2. Having watched pretty much the entirety of Petterson's career at this point, prolly in the realm of 90+% of the games my take is that he is the type of guy who needs to feel loose to be at his best. It's not that he can't handle pressure, if anything he quite clearly puts a ton of pressure on himself and always has, but when he's been at his best he's played with a type of confidence and swagger. To me his effectiveness is mechanically tied to that confidence/swagger; it's not just a mental thing– he lacks the footspeed to beat modern defensemen who are getting faster and are better skaters than ever before so he needs to be able to back them off with his puck skills to create space for himself to open up passing and shooting lanes. When he's not confident with the puck, he bobbles it and doesn't threaten defensemen and they're commonly able to smother him into turning over the puck, but when he flashes his puck skills with dangles and stickwork he's able to create the space he needs to snip shots and make good passes. So I argue Petterson's success, more than most players, is tied to his confidence level and ability to play loose. Hopefully despite all the external pressure in the market now for him to rise up and "be the guy" he'll be able to thrive and regain that swagger he's maintained for most of his career excepting the wrist injury era.

  3. Marcus Pettersen is excellent addition for on ice but also as a future tutor/ mentor for up and coming fellow Swede Tom Willander. Smart move….

  4. This guy hockeys. Laurnece and Gillis were some pretty smart guys when they ran the Canucks. Wonder if Alvin and Rutherford will be seen as the the same? I guess it depends on game 7

  5. Once you have been in an abusive relationship and it ends it takes time to recover some people never do I think we need to step back and see how Petey plays in a couple of weeks. I know he’s a hockey player he makes a lot of money but mental health can affect anyone so let’s all take a big breath and see how this turns out

  6. Nice to listen to. BUT the stanley cup is a north American tradition. It is about pride for the players that hoist the cup. The season the playoffs and the style of north American hockey is big boy rough.
Swedish guys don't feel the same way about our traditions. They have tons of talent hockey iq but they don't have the passion. It is a very good paycheck for them. You can't fault them but they will disappear in the playoffs. The sedins just got pushed into the boards they were useless. Petterson is now know league wide so now he is targeted by goons. He cannot handle it. He is a twig. That is a simple as it gets

  7. I too was preoccupied with acquiring better defense. I think of these two deals as one, three way deal. The more I think about it, the more I think it was genius. All these players have great speed, size and they're good team mates.

  8. Read my post again dummy. Ohlund was a great player but did not win a stanley cup. Swedes are good players just don't build your team around them expect them to lead not their style

  9. Gilman always has so much insight. I agree D Petey reminds me of Tanav. Let's hope playing with elite countrymen will rebuild EP40's fire.
