He literally only has six more empty net goals than Gretzky…. plus if he doesn't break it this season and plays next season he's gonna absolutely demolish the record. People act like he has 500 net goals

I promise you if he played back in the day he would have had injuries, the game was ALOT rougher back then with bigger bruisers that would have targeted him.
That being said ovi is no shrimp and I’m sure he would have held his own to some point but with the lack of skating ability comparing to Gretzky he would of gotten caught off guard a few times or slashed like crazy especially sitting in his slot for one timers being predictable.
Good on him for breaking records regardless of how and I’m happy to see it happen in our day and age.

Ever since the NHL changed the Rules & took the RED LINE away they opened it up & Scoring soared & HITS/FIGHTS are down 90% from the rougher era of the 1970s/80s/90s. 99 was so dominant the NHL changed the Rules to slow him down (GOOGLE "1985 GRETZKY RULE), Playwrs today don't have to worry about dodging a Scott Stevens, Debis Potvin, Chelios, Suter, Neely, Larmer, Probert etc, its more a skating All Star Game now and ALOT easier to play when you don't get hit, the league is watered down 32 teams and no Red Line, OF COURSE records will ve broken BETTMAN changed the rules to make it easier and make more money, its always the $$$ but he wrecked the game. Nowadays in the Stanley Cup finals you don't fet the Best On Best, there wrre 2 HOFamers on the both teams combined last year, in 70s-90s each team had 3,4,5 some had 7,8,9,10 even 11 HOFAMERS on a single team so you had stacked teams n the Vest on Best, Its a Bettman b*tch league now

Ovies score is actually insane if you think of how bad the goalies were back in the day. He is a strong shooter no doubt.
Edit: Even going back into the 90s the goalies didn't have the structure they have today.

Lets be real. Gretz could easily have gotten 1500 goals if he didn't pass so much.
The game is different today than when gretzky played . Talk about the two line pass where are all his assists definatley not the better player .
Ovi isn't anywhere close to Gretzky.
The only comment I have is that I don't recall Gretzky being put on the ice in his last two seasons to get goals every time the opposing team pulled their goalie. It's a bit too opportunistic. As long as he comfortably passes Gretzky's mark however, there won't be any criticism. The point being is that his team is actively trying to tilt goals towards him to break the record whereas Gretzky just sought normal ice time. Regardless, this is just a goal scoring record. The real indicator of an offensive asset is goals and assists, and in that category there is only one GREAT ONE.

Can we all just appreciate that Ovechkin decided to stay in the United States and play in the NHL after these last two years he was supposed to finish out his career in the Russian professional league as a tribute to his parents his brother who passed away in early age and to his friend Ivan Kovalchuk.
