Capitals Top 50 Moments | Gartner and Murphy Traded for Ciccarelli
On March 7, 1989, the Capitals traded Mike Gartner and Larry Murphy for Dino Ciccarelli in what would become a transaction including three Hall of Famers.
Dino was a great player, but losing Mike and Larry hurt. Thank goodness Poile was able to "shake things up" by trading Ovi away. May is absolutely right about Murphy. The fans gave him such a hard time! Larry made that trade work out by winning 4 Cups!
That is the season I did become a full-time fan. I didn't know the fullness of the trade. Meaning, I didn't grasp what the Caps traded away and the return.
Correct if I'm wrong, but didn't Dino get injured before making his home debut…? I think he was hurt in a game against the Flyers in Philly.

Love these throwbacks.. Dino, Dale and Rod were my favorite CAPS growing up. 3 tough & deadly legends.

Heart broke when Gartner got traded. I didn't dislike Dino. Just wish we didn't have to give up my favorite player for him.
