Why the Oilers should trade for John Gibson

The Edmonton OIlers have emerged as a Stanley Cup contender but they’re once again dealing with issues in net, as starting goaltender Stuart Skinner continues to struggle early in games and against good teams. Would Anaheim Ducks goalie John Gibson be a good trade target for Edmonton, or does it make sense for Oilers to look elsewhere?

  1. Edmonton statistically is one of the BEST defensive teams in the NHL this season and Skinner can’t succeed with this team. Sorry we need a good goalie who will be GREAT with this team not a meh goalie that is good with this team.

  2. You guys are talking about the 'weather' here, Skinner riding out, surviving bad periods and all that very speculative situations. Skinner is not a cup winning goalie, period. We need a No 1, a solid goalie, no tandems, not 'weather-goalies'.

  3. If Edmonton is serious about winning the cup, then they need an upgrade. Skinner is not the answer. Don't tell me he is a good value. You guys are missing the point. Oilers are in win now mode.

  4. Skinner doesnt have the "IT" factor that it takes to win the cup. He doesnt ever steal a game for the oil….consistently the second best goalie on the ice..

  5. What’s concerning is look at all the playoff teams’ starter right now… in the east: Thompson, Andersen/Kotchetkov, Markstrom, Woll/Stolarz, Bobrovsky, Vasilevskiy, Talbot… in the West: Hellebuyck, Oettinger, Gustavsson, Hill, Kuemper, Blackwood, Demko…

It’s hard to argue that skinner is not the 16th best goalie in that list. That’s not average goaltending… it’s below average, especially for a cup aspiring team. And it’s true that he’s had stretches of brilliance but even team Canada trusts Montembeault more, who’s had dreadful stretches this season. Nothing against Skinner, I think he’s improved a lot, but the goaltending game has changed and if you want to give yourself a chance you need to go get solid goaltending…

  6. Think Karel Vejmelka would be a better option. 2.8 cap hit, UFA at end of season. If you traded for Gibson, to make money work, you probably have to Skinner to Anaheim or make a separate trade if you still wanted to get a depth forward and another Defenseman.

  7. Lifelong Oilers fan here. Skinner is not the guy. Way too many games with 3 or more goals on the first 10 shots. I dont really have faith in bowman to fix any issues either

  8. A lot of Gibson slander here. While Dostal has 9 more games played, Gibson has a 0.914 this season and isn't that far behind Dostal in goals saved above expected (7th in league vs Dostal at 4th).

  9. It’s hilarious that the Oilers refuse to ante up for a goalie like Gibson. It’s obviously their key weakness. It’s sad to see this organization waste prime McJesus years.

  10. Best part of the Oiler/Avs game is Skinner gets pulled after two and let in even worse goal than Blackwood did….. and Blackwood played the night before 😅

  11. Skinner ain’t the answer— of course we went to the Bruins-Oilers & Skinner shut out the Bruins – Oiler fans told us the more shots skinner sees the better he gets

  12. Skinner is too slow, he has horrible lateral movement, he literally gets beat on almost every grade A chance.. especially breakaways.. if you look at replays in slow motion usually his saves come from bad shots on grade A chances, its not him making the save otherwise.. I'd move on from Skinner right away,

  13. Gibson isnt the answer either, the guys always hurt. And i wouldnt pay him what he wants. Hope the mangement of the Oilers open their eyes and stop making stupid moves.

  14. Oilers do not need an upgrade, and Gibson isn't that upgrade. Stick with what they have. The lockerroom chemistry is more important than a trade.
