Martin Nečas has hit the ground running with the Colorado Avalanche after the blockbuster three-way trade that sent Mikko Rantanen out. After watching all five of his first games with the Avs against the Bruins, Rangers, Islanders, Blues, and Flyers, I break down how he’s fitting in. His offensive zone entries have been especially impressive, but his speed, stickhandling, and playmaking have also stood out. Could he be the missing piece Colorado needed? Let’s take a deep dive into his early impact and what this means for the Avs moving forward.

he's a mini mcdavid getting paid only 6.5
The avs had 100% pp through the first 5 games. IDK how it fell off a cliff the way it did in december but they're power play has a much higher ceiling then the floor they're currently at
This trade is getting better every game. I loved Mikko and will always remember him as an Avs, but it’s shocking to see just how much he actually slowed down everyone with his sluggish play. Drury has not been bad either, it’s just that Necas has been shining
could you try doing some sens content. Would love to see that.
As a Canes fan, both teams got better. Mikko is a perfect fit for the Carolina system, and Martin is what that Colorado top line had been lacking. Been watching the Avs when I can, and that top line is electric.
The Canes were using Necas for zone entry only on the powerplay. The team just doesn't carry the puck into the zone. That's a part of why he's pegged as a turnover machine. I've seen it so many times: Canes dump in, KK retrieves, sends it around boards to Necas, jumps past him, goes to Orlov or someone at the point, it goes back behind the net again, Necas fails to get it off opponents as first man in, puck is in our zone. Mikko isn't going to have that problem. That slower play is exactly what Carolina needs in their game-breaker.
from a Canes fan – y'all are gonna LOVE Marty (if you don't already). Definitely has the skill to be a 40G+, 90-100Pts player. On the broadcast the other night vs. the Kings, the commentators talked about missing "One-man zone entry" Marty and I'm glad you mentioned that in the vid.
I'm still so sad Necas is off the Canes. I have three jerseys with his name on it. But I guess I've gotten a second favorite team now.
The best players are often the best skaters.
He will be over 40 next year for sure
Amazing break down thanks man! The zone entry ability has been seriously impressive. Mackinnon is the guy that the avs rely on to enter the zone on PP and Marty now gives some really cool slingshots and tempo changes that I think will catch the defense flat footed. If Marty had Mikko's finishing ability he'd have 6 goals in these first 4 games. The high danger scoring chances have been insane with the top line.
I think Marty will get over 100 points next year and being realistic, I would guess 40s for goals but if he can find another level to his scoring touch, my god.
His vision on playmaking and passes has been noticeable as well. Constantly cross ice passing or doing no look drop passes. I really like his creativity and vision so far.
He seems easy to be on the ice for his size and have seen some things online about him diving. Any comments or videos of that by the chat?
He draws a crapload of penalties with that size but hoping that's not from consistently selling like I've had a little bit of seeing so far.
Our powerplay has changed dramatically with the departure of the left hand howitzer and another righty to match mack. We have our forwards cycling behind and in front of the net through areas where you would leave mikko to be able to clap a bomb at any time. On the Blues, Mack drew 2 guys out of position by simply gliding through the crease and Drouin just had to put it on net.
I'm very excited about Marty. Only 126 players have scored 100 points in the show. Marty was just under pace with no good Elite playmakers on the Canes. Add Mack and Makar feeding this man pucks and I think we're looking at a younger/faster/cheaper 100 point scorer than Moose.
Love Moose and wish him all the best and hope he makes as much money as his heart wishes.
The cap flexibility to make moves won't be apparent till about this time next year but we're looking good.
Not having a strong net presence has killed the PP if Val can stay healthy once he gets back, the PP should get back on track.
Does the NHL now copyright all footages and demonetize NHL related channels on youtube? I used to make a lot of NHL videos that did quite well in the past but stopped after they kept blocking my videos due to copyright and didn't want to waste my time making a video only to have it blocked.
Video was great, but I subbed for the nostalgic NSC for montage music
more avs the better 🤷♀
I'd like to know how fast Ehlers is.
anyone who didnt know about how elite necas is probably just watches their own team. i was so hopeful the ducks would get him last offseason
Necas was NHL leader in points at some point in this season, playing the second line with not really elite players. And on top of that, he wasn’t even in the first PP unit. I mean that’s gotta mean something. I’m really hyped to see him play for the Avs – fast skilfull team that suits him incredibly well, while playing with insanely good players in the 1st line and the 1st PP. The chemistry between him and Nathan is already showing despite Necas having only ONE training with the team.
If Necas is on a hot steak he is great, its just that he seems to be a on/off guy
Neči finally getting the recognition he deserves. Playing more time for the 1st line gives him obviously more confidence he needs. That will result in a much better consistency of his performance during the season. 💪
Wait until the playoffs. That is where you will see the true Necas. You have a very small sample size of him.
Marty is for sure 100 pt player on this team. Makes me wonder how many mikko could get if he wasnt coasting all the time. Yes, mikko has higher end talent but he doesnt work hard. Im happy to have Necas and its kinda cool to see us win a faceoff when we need it(drury).
Really good content man. I really like that you acknowledge your possible missteps (re Necas' defensive ability). Builds a lot of credibility fast, and pretty rare these days. Cheers.
Necas is no Rantanen, especially defensively.
Your logic: skating fast = cups? Lets ask McOverrated how that worked out as he put up 0 points in 4 of 7 finals games and got carried by his 3rd line (who are slow as fu@<)
Rantanen is at minimum a point per game player, Necas 🤔🤔🤔🤷 nope, not so much.
I'm gonna be 100% real, as a lifelong Carolina fan, ya'll need to CHILL THE FUCK OUT. This entire video is a hot take. Necas is having a fluke season. Some of ya'll are being extremely cringe right now. He's always been a solid player, super fast, good vision. Yet, he's also lanky, soft on the puck, loses his balance constantly and falls, loses the puck, literally OVERSKATES his own puck at times, and is trash on defense, as ALL defense metrics will blatantly show you. This guy is having a great season, but I've been skeptical since the beginning of the season. This is not the Necas I know. He is playing better than he usually does, and highly doubt he will continue this for years to come. SUPER fkn cringe these people who literally know NOTHING about Necas, or Carolina for that matter, and then see Necas after a big trade in a few games and act like he's being uncovered for the first time. It's unbelievably cringe holy hell.
I wrote all of this before you fucking said 50 goals. You literally don't know anything about hockey if you believe that.
Here is a hot take for you. Next year, Necas will outscore rantanen wherever rantanen signs. He WAS the best player in the nhl for the first month of the year and then the canes had the brilliant idea of playing him with Jesperi offence destroyer kotkaniemi and also eric who the hell is this guy robinson. I mean.. if he was on the first line with aho no way this trade is even possible.
Necas at 100 points next year not a hot take but a more realistic number would be 85-90.
I think something that gets skipped over a lot specifically with the Avs is how players benefit from practicing with Mackinnon and Makar. LOC is a great example for anyone who has watched the Avs over the years. You can see how much he has grown and how much his game has become a version of Mackinnon's. No doubt he has picked up skills, tricks, and training techniques and utilized them. I think Necas, who is starting at a much higher level than LOC is going to have a sharp increase over the next year.
Can you talk about Filip Chytil and JT Miller after the trades
I'm a big avs fan! the more avs content the better! Just subbed thanks!
I tweeted this to the announcement, but Canes traded Neccas while he’s in super saiyan 2 gohan mode
Long time Avalanche fan from Denver. I'm ok with the trade the only issue I see with Necas is that he and MacKinnon both like that off wing one timer on the PP, so will be interesting to see how they adjust. The really overlooked piece of that trade was securing Drury. The Av's now have 4 solid lines (With Nuke returning after the 4 Nations) giving that top heavy line more time to rest. Just like the Moose Necas was not brought in to play defense so not concerned with his D abilities or lack of(Most of his potential line mates are solid 2 way players Nuke, Lekhy, Drouin, etc..). These guys have been covering for Rantanen for years. Cheers and thanks for the break down,
He's totally 100+ points per season talent, easily. He was on pace for that with Canes at the start of this season already, with Avs I believe he will definitely do that.
I wanted chytil to stay on the rangers they lack a czech player
Been watching him in Carolina for a few years. I absolutely think he could be a 40/60 guy next year.
Early returns say 40G+ and 90-100pts is definitely within reach.
So good to see Necas and Drury landed with a really good team.
