NHL Goalie Breakdown: Carter Hart

Welcome our first NHL Goalie Breakdown’s presented by MAP South Goaltending. This segment is designed for goalies to learn how to think critically and evaluate goalies when watching games and highlights. NHL goalies are the best in the world at their craft, so we should study their games and identify what you can pull from them. And any corrections or suggestions I make are not a shot at these goalies, as everyone can use constructive feedback and hope you guys learn to utilize critical thinking when evaluating yourself and other goalies. I encourage you to comment and direct message in hopes of continuing the conversation so everyone benefits. Also, please DM me your recommendations for next week’s post!

Our first segment is on Carter Hart. Hart has had a ton of success at an early age: World Junior Gold & Silver Medalist, 2-time CHL Goalie of the Year, and had his NHL debut at 20 years old! As the NHL season came to a pause, Hart was on fire. Since January 8 Hart went: 11-3-0, 0.929 SV%, 2.08 GAA. This helped the Flyers move into a playoff position in the Metropolitan Division.

Much is said about his outstanding mental toughness and preparation (InGoal Mag just did a great article on him, I would check it out!), but I wanted to focus on how that translates into his on-ice game. We will focus on his technical and tactical game with it broken down into different scenarios: Line Rush and In-Zone.

  1. Hey I have a question. On 2-1’s I usually start heels at the top of the crease so I can get a little momentum back Incase there is a rebound or a pass. It’s not like as fast as backwards as I would use on a break away it’s just a little push. Is that ok to do?
