In a nail-biting Vodacom URC North-South derby, the Vodacom Bulls secured a dramatic 33-32 victory over the DHL Stormers at Cape Town Stadium, ending their long-standing struggle to win in Cape Town. Bulls director of rugby Jake White praised No. 8 Cameron Hanekom, comparing his impact to former schoolboy sensation Nick Koster. Hanekom’s explosive start, breaking through the Stormers’ defence from the kick-off, set the tone for the match and led to an early try by Cobus Wiese.
White highlighted Hanekom’s all-round performance, noting his ability to carry the ball, physicality, and lineout skills, which earned him the Man of the Match award. However, he also acknowledged the young player’s occasional over-eagerness, attributing it to his youth and potential for growth.
Reflecting on the narrow margin of victory, White admitted the Bulls were fortunate to escape with a win after Stormers replacement Clayton Blommetjies missed a last-minute conversion. He humorously remarked that former Springbok Schalk Burger had quipped, “Can you try any harder to lose a game?” White emphasized the need for better composure and control in future matches, particularly when under pressure in their own half.
This win not only broke the Bulls’ Cape Town curse but also kept them in contention for a top-two finish in the URC standings. White expressed his satisfaction with the bonus-point victory, which brought the Bulls within two log points of the second-placed Glasgow Warriors
