Ok… he might not be Luka Doncic, but Martin Necas might fill in exactly where Mikko Rantanen fell off.
Huge shoutout to @thehockeypdocast for the Necas Canes clips, was a huge help in showing a lot of the more subtle aspects of Martin’s game.
Another shoutout to @jfreshhockey on X (Twitter), great charts and data. Great work, overall.

Necas was always gonna be shipped before the Canes lost him for nothing. He nixed a trade to Columbus for their draft pick because he wouldn’t resign there. Because he was on the Carolina Hurricanes the Avalanche were able to squeeze Drury and picks out of them too. Should have been a 1 for 1.
This trade should have been 1 for 1 and honestly the Avs disrespected the Canes for asking for more.
Necas is about to hit peak numbers. He’s gonna dominate having the freedom to create and play fast as fuck. The Avs are my second favorite team behind the sharks. So excited for this playoff run. Their speed is my favorite ability they have and it’s only gonna get better with time.
Game winning Dfensive play with game winning goal the next night. Mikko just lost 3 mil a year based on the last week.
He did it again tonight. Carolina has some issues. When you break down his time in Carolina, he was playing on a slow second line and only getting 14 minutes of ice time. What were they doing? Now Mikko is on the team and having issues. He's only got 2 points in 8 games. Meanwhile, Necas now has 9 points, 4 goals, and 2 game winning goals. But he's more than that. His defensive play tonight with his stick, got the puck out and led to the rush that allowed the winning goal. Necas never even takes a shift off either. He's always moving, getting the puck in the zone and some beautiful passes.
I really enjoy your editing
you're right. colorado cooked
Necas has been underrated for a while. Just never had a linemate that fit him in Carolina. Rod never played him with Aho and Svechnikov, that line would have been lit
Necas will be 100 points player.
So proud of him. As I said in the comments under a different video, we here in the Czech republic really believe that his performance on the World Championchips and recognition by the public immensely boosted his confidence. We never talked about Neči as we did about Pasta but now everybody talks about him. He really has so much potential that even he himself, I think, did not realize he had. To see people praising this guy so much is sometimes even so hearthwarming that my eyes go all watery (that has to do with our Czech nature – we really love when people praise something/someone czech).
I was sad when we traded Necas, he’s one of the most underrated players in the league. I am glad he’s getting the spotlight he deserves in Colorado
Its funny how these things go. Nobody knew this was how it would play out. People can say they did but they had educated guesses (or sometimes uneducated :p). But all the worries people had about Rantanen in Carolina also apply for Necas in Colorado, it just happened to go different:
-"Chemistry matters. Rantanen will have his points drop off as he won't play with Nate"
Yeah, Chemistry matters. And Necas will also not be playing with his old linemates. And Rantanen will play with Aho, a fellow Finn who has played with many times before and who is a great two way player and an everything goes type.
Obviously how this has (so far) gone is that Necas has had more immediate success but arguing that anyone "knew" this is silly.
-"Rantanens value is overinflated from playing with Nate and Necas is cheaper"
Yeah…….right now he is cheaper. But Necas will ALSO get his value boosted a ton by playing with Nate. AND the cap is going up. So you might actually end up forced to pay a lot more for Necas in a few years than Rantanen today. Just how the cap works. Do I know that? Of course not, because no one knows the future :p
And there are many other points like that.
Basically it has gone an interesting way. But I still think trading Rantanen was not the move, but so far it has worked out fine for Colorado so for this season its ok for them. And that keeps them competitive.
Im a Carolina and a Colorado fan (aka im Finnish :p So can guess my third team pretty easily). So neutral on this. Hope both teams the best.
This will go down in history as one of the worst trade in NHL history, i am a Canes fan. Necas has speed, you cant teach speed. Rants is well overrated….
Just rework the Rantanen in Colorado video into a Rantanen in Carolina video. Just how good he was, and what might be going "wrong" with him right now (my thoughts: nothing. Learning a new team. It takes time. "Easier" for Necas as he has the speed to keep up and Nate is better than Aho).
I think the goalies are the biggest move they made
Better acquisition than Doncic
Great video 👌🏼 All they need is a playoff goalie now 🙄 go Avs!
When the franchise you play for has Sami Kapanan as its alumni its hard to be the fastest player in team history
There’s still a one line team
is no one talking about the title loll
Necas is going to help the avs set the league on fire after the break.
Love the Avs videos. Will watch them all.
Avs fan here. Devoted fan. Have only missed a few games since the 2016-17 season. I've watched the core of Mack/Makar and Mikko grow. I'm a huge fan of Mikko Rantanen. He's a top line star and has a wonderful shot.
With that said, as shocked and disappointed as I initially was- I am not now. Marty Necas is a possession king. Put that along with Nate MacKinnon and Cale Makar and the other top-6 Avs, he's a solid addition.
When Val Nichushkin returns, this team will be beyond difficult to deal with. I haven't even mentioned Mackenzie Blackwood. #GoAvsGo
If the Avs can get good goalie play they are dangerous no matter how they get in the playoffs
You absolutely nailed it!
Rantanen can say he wouldve taken a discount all he wants. If he was actually willing to make the money work in Colorado, he would still be there.
always thought martin necas was an amazingly underrated player; skating, skills, ability to anticipate how a play is developing. just a pleasure to watch..very happy to see him getting appreciated.
It is really a great fit in Colorado for Marty! Happy for him! ☺
Canes fans always hated Necas for “not playing defense” when we have 11 other guys who’s job is that. Honestly, offensively no one could keep up with Martin Necas on the canes and that’s what held him back. I don’t think he’s going to be a factor of mackinon, I think him and mackinon will be an elite duo.
Hey man, what are the best sites to find a lot of the statistics you pull up? I use NHL edge some and Statmuse, but it looked like you used some other sites too. Thanks
4:22 yea, use him ripping a shot through ALEXANDAR GEORGIEV to prove a point 😭 he is 100% a demon though
Great video! I guess I don't really see the Marner comparison but just a difference of opinion I guess.
He is rapid. Great skills and puck control. He's made the Avs a must watch for a neutral
No, need some years or a cup to see for sure. Losing 100 point Stanley Cup Top.Powerforward is not nothing .
Necas was handcuffed in the Canes system which is probably the least creative system in the offensive zone in the league. Their motto is "create chaos" in the O-zone which completely fails to take advantage of truly talented players like Necas consistently.
YOU SHOULD DO A VIDEO ANALYSIS OF HOW CAROLINA'S "CREATE CHAOS" GAME DOESN'T PRODUCE GOALS RELIABLY.
I was telling people that I didt mind Mikko being traded. People called me crazy but I stand by what I said. Mikko, and truth to be told many others, eat and take advantage of playing on the Mac and Makar line. Once you ask them to play 2nd or worse lines, they produce nothing or their production dips. This applies to Mikko, Midlestad, Colton, and others. They eat while on the Mak line because Mak and or Makar set them up. Now, look at Necas, he is a creator, fast skater and a great goal scorer too. Look at the points since the trade. I believe his tally is way higher than what Mikko has accumulated since the trade.
I also believe that Necas will get better with time because of the chemistry with Mak.
So many Avs fans are still flipping out over this. I get being attached to Mikko having been on the team for just shy of a decade now and being a fixture next to MacKinnon, but Necas is really good. Too many fans are acting like he's not worth it and is trash in comparison to Mikko. I don't get it, I don't think I've been watching the same games as them, plus the team is very excited about Necas and has nothing but great things to say. If he can develop on the team and get settled in the guy is going to be an absolute beast.
“He made Colorado scary again” Then I look at him in thumbnail 😂😂😂😂😂 Bro looking at his sides both angles 😂😂😂😂😂
Nate basically said that it was fun to have another right hand shooter on the team so he could rotate around more. This means that Nate can pull defenders away instead of being somewhat stuck in one spot on the ice
How good is the other player Av’s got in the trade?
On last world Championship, Necas formation destroyed Sweden, they scored 4 of 5 goals before half of the match. To put it into contex, Sweden werent losing in the match untill that time, throught whole cup they received only 9 goals and had untill that time best goalie. So favorites to win whole thing. In that 4 goals, Necas himself was 1+2…. I know Americans are less interested in iihf wc but he was real gamechanger for czech team and it shows how good he is
Necas is better than rantanen in my opinion.
Avs over rated. Swept by Canucks and almost shut out both times.
Really liked this video, thank you. Im extremely proud of him, i remember him scoring his first goal on world cup in 2018 i believ, he scored something like 10 seconds before the end of third period when he flew with the puck over the entire playground and Czechia thanks to that gained 2 points. I knew ever since that he will becamae a world hockey star and my prediction was correct. Heres the goal i was talking about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBVvEgaUAR0&ab_channel=MikeOgrady
From a die hard Avalanche fan I appreciate your break down, should be an interesting run.
Proud to hear that, I wish him to continue like this
yea as a canes fan i miss him already but hes young and has struggled midseason to keep any momentum in his scoring and points tallys…started out on top of the point leaders list for whole league in first 20 games,,, went on a 15 20 game slump after the first 2
