Despite the many similarities between Leon Draisaitl and Nathan MacKinnon, TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button, joins Domino’s That’s Hockey to discuss which player is better.
I think both are generational in their own way. On any given night – either one of these players could be considered the 'best'. I'd take both on my team and call it a day 🙂
I can't believe this is even a question. Leon is a beast and has arguably been as good as Mackinnon this season but Nathan Mackinnon is on another tier of player. McDavid is on his own, then the next tier is Mackinnon and Kucherov then you have the other franchise players like Pastrnak, Makar, Matthews and Draisaitl.

MacKinnon overall because he has explosive speed and stick handling, passing ability, and still possesses a wicked shot / one timer. Draisaitl is the better goal scorer with his shot like Matthews/Ovechkin, but MacKinnon is more complete like a Crosby-type game. It's like asking who is better Crosby or Ovechkin and everyone knows the answer: Crosby.
Nate’s game is beyond Leon’s. I’m not saying he isn’t good, anyone of us Leon haters would take him on our team and would be an instant favourite, BUT. Nates game is better on every metric. The only better metric being Leon’s shooting percentage. That’s because Nate will shoot to create traffic and a rebound. Leon cleans up rebounds rarely taking the first shot of the onslaught. So a lot of empty net goals or served on a plater cross crease.
Kucherov is better than both. He win the art ross last year. He should have won the Hart. He leads the league in points per game played. And he doesn't have a McDavid or Makar ti play with. i
Drai easy. Best passer in the league, frontrunner in goalscoring, Top5 in plus/minus, most game winning goals (9), better at faceoffs, better defensively. The only reason why MacKinnon is even in the conversation this year are all his empty net points.

Nikita Kucherov is the best.
This year, Draisaitl by a small margin. I'd take MacKinnon overall though.
MacKinnon is a better all-around player than McDavid…let alone Draisaitl.

Big Pilers fan. Love Drai and McD but I have to say MacKinnon is the best in the NHL currently and last season as well.
