Wild Card Matchup: Colorado Avalanche (31-22-2) vs. Calgary Flames (26-20-7) w/Cooper Hopkins 2-6-25

Game Story: This was a game between the Colorado Avalanche (hashtag#GoAvsGo) and the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (hashtag#Flames) that had a lot of pace. Cooper Hopkins and I carried the coverage and saw some truths for both of these squads in the long-term.

Colorado Avalanche (31-22-2, Fourth in Central, 1st WC) HC: Jared Bednar Top Performers: Nathan MacKinnon (20-60-80 +15); Mikko Rantanen (Traded 49 GP, 25-39-64 +12); Cale Makar 19-39-58 +14); Martin Necas (Acquired,17-43-60 Even (-4 With COL) Casey Mittelstadt 9-23-32 –13); Artturi Lehkonen (43 GP, 21-9-30 +19) Devon Toews (6-18-24 +15);

COL Outlook: Unlikely goal scorers. Joel Kiviranta and Ross Colton have 24 goals combined. 4-5-1 in the last 10. Necas and Mittelstadt have struggled. Last three (2-1-0) via STL, PHI and VAN have all been shutouts. Coming off a VAN Loss. Has a back-to-back to close the break at EDM. Used four goaltenders with a combined save percentage (Trent Miner, Justus Annunen, Alexandar Georgiev, Kaapo Kahonen, .800) under .875 SV Wedgewood is out. But MacKenzie Blackwood has been a revelation for COL. 20 GP, 12-6-2, 2.04 GAA, .926 SV, 2 SO since joining.

Calgary Flames (26-20-7, Fourth Pacific, 2nd WC) HC: Ryan Huska Top Performers: Jonathan Huberdeau (20-19-39 –7); Nazem Kadri (18-20-38 –15); Blake Coleman (12-17-29 –4); MacKenzie Weegar (6-23-29 +19); Matthew Coronato (14-15-29 +8); Connor Zary (40 GP, 10-12-22 –6); Mikael Backlund (10-12-22 +4); Yegor Sharangovich (11-10-21 –6) Rasmus Andersson (7-13-20 –14)

CGY Outlook: Despite the injuries to Mantha, Kirkland, Zary and Bahl this team still plugs away. Nothing outstanding in goal totals, yet it’s still about seven players with double-digits. Wolf is playing very well. Vladar isn’t. Needs a win after a 1-3-0 stretch to stay in WC2. Has SEA at home on SAT before 4 Nations break.

Goaltending Matchup: MacKenzie Blackwood (39 GP, 18-15-5, 2.50 GAA, .919 SV, 3 SO) vs. Dustin Wolf (19-10-2, 2.58 GAA, .914 SV, 2 SO); Dan Vladar (7-10-5, 3.07 GAA, .888 SV, 2 SO)
