Salary Cap SURGE! Detroit should sign Edvinsson sooner rather than later

The Salary Cap is now expected to rise $7.5M next season, and nearly $9M the following two. This is great news for the Red Wings, who already have Raymond, Larkin and Seider locked up long term on fair deals. But it also means the clock is ticking on signing promising youth like Edvinsson before comparables start making the value unwieldy. Previewing Kraken. #LGRW

  1. I'm curious if Yzerman will pay for a top talent under the new cap structure when he didn't want to give anyone more than Larkin.

  2. I was at the Flames / Wings two Octipie performance in Calgary. Edvinson was outstanding. There was a mass of Red Wing fans twice getting loud Wings chants going. How much of your local base comes from Windsor?

  3. I'm curious, do you guys think Kasper is playing so well currently because he's arriving in the NHL or is it because of Raymond and Larks that he looks so good ? Veleno looked better next to those two too.
However, Kasper is better than Veleno, so no hate towards Kasper.
I don't currently see any player in our squad/ or youngsters that deserve more than Larkin. Except maybe Raymond and Seider currently, because they are near Larkin's level you couldn't have been mad.
Maybe ASP if he becomes what you hope he will be. Makar 2.0
However, if you could get a player like Drai McDavid or something ( I know none of those two will be, just mean those elite superstars), then this Larkin rule shouldn't and won't matter.

Tampa and the Sens now play their next two games against each other…
With our luck, both games go to overtime and both win one each…

  4. Great show tonight fellas ❤ Amazing sweep of western Canada 🇨🇦
I am so happy Yzerman locked up our 3 best players to 7-8 year contracts before this news broke.
If Yzerman gave them bridge deals he would have had to pay way way more in a few years.
All 3 deals already feel like a bargin today and will really help the long term success of the team.
Raymond is turning into a freaking Superstar 🌟 Seider has the potential to win multiple Norris trophies before his career is over!

  5. The internal cap structure that exists in RW will continue until a new player takes the current spots from Larks,MO or Raz. The one who can make the most of a challenge is Edvinsson today. His strength lies in not signing a long-term contract without waiting for the cap to rise. 95,5/MIl can be 97/Mil in the end time will tell.

Toronto can pay Marner 18/Mil per year and still have 10/Mil over signing Tavares and other RFAs,UFAs that they have.

Carolina has the opportunity to sign Rantanen for over 15/Mil and also has the chip to also use the MAX terms on the number of years they offer since they have the player under the current contract.

Everyone else can just use their cap and go after it. Here are two players that S.Y can do it for and it is precisely this type of player that can get the internal cap to move south within RW.

RW is known for not paying its players what they are worth, Mr. S.Y knows himself how he is treated once in a while by RW in the past. So the question is more why should e.i Marner take 18/Min in RW when he can get it in Toronto already and he wants to stay there.

I personally don't think RW is into either of the two as UFAs as neither of the two really wants to play in RW. RW is not the biggest market, lacks a sporting ability to continuously win, go far in the playoffs etc.etc. RW therefore has a very hard time attaching 3/4th depth players like all other contenders do.

RW is far from such a position as they working on thier core and that is why their internal cap structure will remain until they "need" to change it. This summer there will be a trade war, no pun intended

  6. What big talent can we get? I'd take a couple grit forwards we normally couldn't afford to replace Compher and Copp. We got some real good prospects coming up for the rest of the roster to fill up. Need to get a lot stronger forechecking. I like our goalie situation for the seeable future. Our defense next year would be fine with Pellika hopefully making the roster, if not, we could use another D. Sign Kane again on a one year deal. I like Marner for the regular season but he seems to disappear in the playoffs, every year so thats not gonna work.

  7. Greetings from Finland. I've been an enthusiastic Red Wings fan for almost 40 years. I actually thought this salary cap issue yesterday. I dream of getting two ufas after 2025-26 season and that will require a change in the Red Wings internal salary structure.
Who are those two players I would like to see wearing DRW jersey? The other is Kyle Connor who is a Michigan-born All Star player and the other is Niko Mikkola from the northern part of Finland (same neigbourhood where I myself am living). To be able to tempt Connor to Michigan requires a salary over 10 million USDs. Mikkola's salary would be approximately about 5 millions. Then there will still be lots of room to take care of the future contracts of Edvinsson, Kasper etc.

  8. This was my first comment relating to your great podcast which I've been listening to for almost three years now. Unfortunately I have not found this earlier. But you create great content and I am pretty sure that this wasn't my last comment. Thank you for your great work with this podcast, Brian and Scotty.

  9. I knew Raymond was a steal the day he signed.
Simon will be expensive, not sure he and Lemieux will hold back on the sallery. Maybe a bridge deal.

  10. Lock up your prospects, dont sign free agents, and dump kane. Baring a miracle they're mot competing for a cup in the next 3 years, they have enought o get in the playoffs, they have all the pieces in prospects and current players to compete for a cup when asp and danielson are ready. Dont go the holland route and sell your future to appease the fans, not worth it unless you want another 10 years of abysmal hockey with no cup to show for it. If in 3 years the prospects back slide, then worry about free agents. I dont want another kane, or lang, or alfredson, or the plethora of other failed free agent signings if it costs them their prospect pool, not worth it.

  11. I think Yzerman will wait until he knows exactly what the cap will be, and not give money out based upon speculation.

  12. Guys, guys, guys… Not trying to be a douche here, big fan of your show and i tune in every day! BUT… To much strange things said here that makes me wonder if you guys forgot to get your morning coffee or something?🤔🫠

First of all, you CAN'T re-sign a ELC player just whenever you want to, they have to be eligble to do so. Kasper for example stating in this video "we don't HAVE TO re-sign TOMORROW" etc… Well, it's a moot point cause you CAN'T either way, he is in year 1 of 3. Same with Edvinsson, you can't re-sign him in the "now-NOW", when he got another year left on the ELC. This summer is where his eligibility start to be able to even begin discussions… So this segment of "Locking up youth NOW", simply isnt feasable…🤷‍♂️

Other then that i might add that neither of Raymond & Seider where re-signed BEFORE their contracts expired, that also was claimed in this video. They both played out their last year of their ELC and got re-signed more or less last second ahead of training camp, which Seider even missed a few days on… And lastly i will say, there is no all star break this year like also stated in this video, it's 4 nation tournament, you know this and i'll let that one slide…🫡

Anyways, thanks of an otherwise great show, really appreciate and enjoy listening to you guys, just a few notes my ADHD brain could not get over lol🤪 have a good day & forever LGRW!🦑

  13. I’ve been hopeful that the team finds a way to move on from either copp or compher, but does this big cap jump make it reasonable to keep both players as an effective shutdown bottom 6 pair with actual scoring upside? Copp/compher would be a high end 3C. Fill 2nd line spot with FA and/or maybe Kasper at C next year. Fill top line spot with FA or Danielson to give him the same treatment Kasper has gotten

  14. I don't know. For some reason I have a problem with paying people that play games (literally putting an object into a net) even more money than what they already make. Anyway…LGRW

  15. As the salary cap increases, also look for expansion to be more seriously discussed. Most of us here in Atlanta know it's a matter of when, not if, in this area… but other areas are pushing too. With the rise in franchise values and the rise of the cap, we're gonna see interest increase as well. Houston, Phoenix,.. Kansas City? San Diego? Does Portland finally get an ownership group together? Does Milwaukee? The league is at its healthiest point it's ever been. With only 25 US teams, they're definitely interested in adding.

As for the idea of Larks remaining the top salary earner on the team, that's gonna come to an end, and probably this summer at that. When the cap was only inching up, it worked. But the cap is gonna start to soar, FAs will start demanding more, so if we wanna keep ours or bring in new ones, that internal ceiling is gonna end.

    #LGRW!

  16. This idea of Larkin being the highest paid player on the team needs to be abandoned, if the opportunity to bring in a Rantanen or a Marner or a trade opportunity arises for someone that would springboard the team into contender status they can't be worried about how much Larkin makes as a percentage of the cap when he signed.
