Guys, it's a moot point. Toronto needs to get money out if they take money in. Nelson, Bjugstad, O'Reilly etc. plus a defenseman will be more than the $3M in cap at the deadline (with no Jani or Calle)
The only feasible solution is to cut dead weight, give the youth a shot and trade Morgan Rielly to open up space and cap room. $7.5M for a regressing defender over 30 is a net negative.
So it doesn't matter who they trade of the two, they're still broke.
Nothing out there worth trading the young guys. We need cheap contracts going forward not temporary playoff run guys. We have lots of old guys to trade. Any trades for our future prospects which we have in the cupboard is dumb. We do not even know yet if Marner or JT will be back next year. Hard working Robertson plays with more heart than the top 4 put together. Cheap 15-20 goal guy. Domi, Jarncrock, Kampf, no fight Reaves, Holmberg, Timmins need to go first. Any top prospect need to trade for top right hand top 2 defenceman with size and some offence. We also need some more size up front. A guy like Reaves who can play a regular shift.
I hope they to and get Brock Nelson and mayfield . Why is no one else pushing this ? Nelson is 6”4 fast and 30 goal scorer . Mayfield is a great mean 6”5 stay at home defence who by the way shoots right and would be perfect fit for Reilly . He can clear out guys in front of the net he can kill penalties .
Brock Nelson who is on pace for 25-30 goals 50 points who can move up and down lineup . He has scored 30+ goals in many seasons for the crappy isles . Probably gets 40+ on a good team with good players .
Minten, Robertson , 1st round pick in 26 ( we don’t have one this year ) and timmins , heck throw yarnkrook with his contract will replace Mayfield . Isles will half to retain half of Nelson $6 mill contract . His contract is up after this year though only bad thing , but you would have the chance to resign him for probably 5-6 million . Mayfield is signed for another 3 years after this at $3.5 M.
Don’t agree with Darius saying he would rather get rid of Cowan instead of Minten . That’s absurd too me , Cowan has a much Higher ceiling. We have already seen Minten, he will be a 4C in the league , if he is lucky maybe a 3C in a bad team . Cowan has the potential to be a 20-30 goal scorer in league a top 6 winger. I’d get rid of minten in a heart beat if we got a good player back.
It’s gotta be Nelson or mayfield or ROR and schenn. Can’t be anything else . Yeah cousins would be nice but I think if you get him your not getting another D man.

While he still has some perceived value around the league, they need to get out from under that contract pronto. They've got 2 prospects in the entire organization and they're going to deal them for another old guy as short-term help for a team that's going nowhere?
