Rule Change: Full Powerplays should be awarded even at the end of the game

Conor Garland grabbed Connor McDavid and blatantly illegally intentionally eliminated him from the final 20 seconds of a one goal game. Now McDavid will likely be fined and Garland will have no consequences whatsoever. Bush league tactics are repeatedly rewarded in the NHL, and it needs to stop.

  1. It's always an oilers fan crying about something.

60 minutes is 60 minutes, deal with it.

  2. You know what, this commentary is bs. Connor is on top and only wants to get free when it’s to his advantage! The Oilers were already UP a man with the pulled goalie. He initially is holding the Canuck down so they could have a 6 on 4 advantage. Perspective is everything! That’s also NOT his first crosscheck to the head. But, because it’s Connor I’ll bet he only gets a slap on the wrist. !! Should be 5 games minimum. Same for the Canucks defenceman. 5 games.
Better be the same for both. Else wise we know where the bias of the league is.

  3. Why would Garland want to pull McDavid on top of him?? Doesn’t make sense. McDavid did the initial interference. Why would Garland release McDavid when it’s in McDavids advantage. No, he did the right thing. McDavid is NOT the second coming of Gretzky. Holier than thou. Only the Edmonton fan might think so. He probably is the best player in the league, and I LOVE watching him play, but take off those rose coloured glasses boys. He’ll be just as dirty as he needs to be. He wants to win. Can’t blame him for that. But be real people. He still deserves a 5 game suspension for his behaviour.

  4. What a goofy video. McDavid spears Hronek and you cry about McDavid the baby should get attention from the refs? It’s even after that earlier missed call. McDavids rep is now being known as a sneaky dirty player.

  5. I came up with the same idea a few years ago and I still like it a lot.
However, there is an argument to be head that it could be seen as double punishment for the foul, since the trailing team would not only get a man advantage, but also extra overall time to tie the game. Personally I would not mind that, if you don't want your opponent to get extra time, don't commit a foul.

But if it should be two big of an issue for some people, one potential solution would be that the remaining time on the clock get's doubled. so if 30 seconds are still on the clock when the found is committed, the trailing team would get 1 minute powerplay. With 16 seconds remaining , they would get 32 seconds of powerplay.
So in the end, you still don't get your full 2 minutes, but in exchange you at least get some extra time to tie it.

Third option would be that if a foul is committed within the last two minutes, the team gets to choose between a powerplay and a penalty shot

  6. If you add 2 minutes to the clock because of the penalty because if you did the game would not end on the scoring of the goal. There would still be time on the clock so they would have to play it out. This would be nightmarish to install in the game.

  7. You can’t just “extend the game” due to penalty, It doesn’t work that way. That rule change will literally never happen.

What happens if somebody commits a minor penalty during extra time? Does it get extended again? No, that’s just the way the game is. You had 58 minutes to score or draw a full two minute penalty, after that, there’s diminishing returns, if you left it to the last seconds to score that’s your tough luck if the other team decides to waste your final moments by taking a penalty.

  8. That's the dumbest shit I've ever heard. Extend the game? What is this soccer. Do you want injury time too?

  9. It's a good proposal. An alternative would be that if there is a penalty in the final minute that would result in a power play (aka non-offsetting), the team that would get the power play can elect to get a penalty shot instead. I think something like was used in Ringette. You would get the penalty shot even if the time expired during delayed call.

  10. So in this example, when McDavid is called for interfering with Garland before anything else unfols afterwards, does that mean the game automatically ends?

Hope he gets 5 games, nobody is above the rules not even precious McDavid

  11. Roger Neilson schooled. Other ways to win games…Backchecking, Push guys riding the blueline offside in the dying seconds. Also dying sconds, Defensive zone faceoffs, hold, hold, hold.

  12. Game Extended!!!……Thats the stupidest idea I've ever heard. Suck it up. McDavid is QUICKLY becoming one of the worst cheap shot artists in the league and Edmonton fans are crying now that he got a taste of his own medicine. Refs saw and were WATCHING. they had put their whistles away. Thats what happens sometimes. Get over it. Extend the game to accommodate ONE player…..SO DUMB

  13. Any penalty with less than 2 minutes left in the game should be an automatic penalty shot. Awarding a "2 minute power play" with 17 seconds on the clock is a joke. Also – unrelated side note – I think PP% and PK% are flawed stats and should go away. What really matters is power play goals for / against per minute of advantage / disadvantage.

  14. Cross checking someone in the face is different from when I played. The gloves were dropped and there was no deadly weapons swung in anyone’s face.

  15. Haha man. Oiler fans want to change the rules over this. Man yall never cease to amaze me. Cry more man. That stuff happens in hockey more than ya think .

  16. why is everyone so mad at garland? The refs have the option to call or not call a penalty and they chose to not call a penalty. big deal.. whats next are you all going to start crying about garland poke checking the puck away from mcbaby? Glad mccuck is getting a match pentalty, such a dirty play on his behalf.

  17. the refs probably didnt blow the whistle because the oilers were attacking and there was only like 15 seconds on the clock. By blowing the play down, the refs interfere with the oilers forward progression. Garland had the high IQ of knowing the situation and by slowing down mcdavid, he elevated his teams chances of winning. Garland took the risk of taking a penalty on the play in return for taking time off the clock. Its called "killing the clock" happens all the time in football, soccer, basketball, etc. Garland stayed within the rules and was not intentionally trying to injure mcdavid. At worst, it would have been interference on garland or roughing on both garland and mcdavid. Mcdavid on the other hand did try to intentionally injure garland on the play by crosschecking him in the head. Mcdavid is the face of the league and role model to many children. He should not be taking intentional match penalties.

  18. I had a similar suggestion but wouldn’t mess with the clock. If either team takes a 2 minute minor with <1 min, then the penalty gets split into TWO 1 minute minors so the game would go to 5 on 3 for whatever time remains… and would continue into any potential OT.

The problem with either suggestion? The ref has to call the freaking penalty!

I think the refs deserve the suspension here.

  19. if mcdavid would have been ejected for the spear on hronek, he would not have had the ability to take a dive in the last 20 seconds of the game and then injure another player with a cross check to the head.

  20. Absolutely terrible proposed rule. Hockey would just end up like basketball where players would just be drawing penalties indefinitely, making the last few minutes of play last an hour. Get over it.

  21. I like it. Sometimes it might put a lot more scrutiny on the call, (and referring the entire game, you know sports fans are….
but yeah, at most it add 1:59 to game and prevents what you just showed, and I am sure there are lots of subtle ways to do that, 2 seconds here 4 seconds there….going for 13 at once was a bit greedy. but Evil always was impatient

  22. McDavid was right, Garland really deserved getting cross-checked as it happened. Referees are too often missing relevant judgment. But changing the rules might simply help. Thumbs up !!!

  23. Worst part is the refs weren't going to call anything even if vancouver touched the puck. Wes Mccauley, aka "old school hockey is the best!", never calls penalties unless they are so obvious, a blind/deaf guy would have noticed it. Myers should have been called for interference (late hit), elbowing, charging, slashing, AND the crosscheck to the face.

  24. Even though half the time it was McDavid laying it was definitely a penalty on Garland That’s not in question. The question is why are Edmonton fans defending McDavid for cross checking Garland in the head and somehow blaming the Canucks for his suspension?
    The Canucks aren’t the referees.

  25. This logic falls apart if the trailing team gets a penalty after the leading team does. Does the game immediately end then? What if the leading team gets a 2nd penalty? Add another 2 minutes? What about offsetting penalties? The refs had a choice to call offsetting penalties, or no penalties. They went with letting them play playoff style.
